power steering pinion seal

Post by neepboy » Sun Jul 01, 2012 5:16 pm

hi guys, got the usual pinion seal failure again. I replaced it a year ago having purchased the complete seal kit (the rest of which is still in the packet on the shelf in the garage untouched!)
DO you think I can fit another seal or is it likely that the rack is worn beyond what a new seal could achieve?

so do i need a new rack? OR
do I need a new seal?

I remember reading a thread last time and some one had the spec for the pinion seal and was talking about just buying it rather than a whole kit...does anyone know if this ever happend?
I obviously rather just buy one seal than a whole kit of bits I'm not likely to use, I have a couple of seal suppliers who say they could prob do me one if I knew the spec...

over to you and thanks bongo boys and girls...summer is just round the next corner...honest

i have a great bearing and seal suppliers, who can usually source anything, but he failed. he said he recognised it straight away as a ford part but said he couldnt get them on their own, i gave up and like you bought the full kit, then that failed within 6 months, i replaced the rack after that.
maybe ford may help.

its a standard seal but has a wear lip on the inner seal, that wears away but seals as it wears down, if i have another go i would do as julian suggested and thoroughly clean the centre shaft and try with a standard seal.

My man went as far as finding the maker of the seals..... but can't get them alone.... seems to be a "closed" shop as far as supply... kind of a cartel..... [-X [-X
It does indeed have a wear lip and thorough cleaning of the shaft plus a smear of PS fluid on assembly seems to do the trick..... unless your shaft is really worn.....
