Coolant alarm

Hi,
I am new to the forum but want to ask a question about coolant alarms. I have one fitted on my bongo and i'm not sure how they work? When I put my key in the alarm comes on and so does the light. After a few seconds it goes off and I start up with no problems. So is the alarm going off when I put the key in a sign of a problem or normal. Does the alarm only go off properly if I'm driving along and lose coolant?
Any advice appreciated.

If its Haydn's alarm then it should light and beep when ignition comes on just to let you know it is functioning. If you want to test then when engine is cold, remove header tank cap, replace, remove one screw that holds the wires to the header, employ a small child to put finger over the hole, switch on ignition and the alarm will be constant. Replace screw in exactly the same thread it came out of. I find the best way to do this is to gently screw the screw backwards till it falls into the old thread. The reason for this is if you keep putting new threads in the hole it will leak.

Please don't remove the screw as above, doing this is not necessary and can possibly cause problems.....
When you switch on the ignition the alarm should beep/flash for 1 to 3 seconds as stated above.....if it goes on for more than 5 seconds then either your coolant is very weak...it is freezing cold...or....the screw is dirty (in this case remove and clean the thread or ask me for a new screw)
If the alarm stays on or comes on when driving it is telling you that the coolant level in the tank is below the screw and you must stop asap and top up.
If you want to test the alarm....locate the alarm unit under the dash and "unplug" the bullet connector....this will cause the alarm to sound.

Thanks for the replies. It all sounds pretty normal then regarding the light and beeping. I won't be unscrewing anything as I would not feel confident doing that anyway. I worry more about my beloved Bongo than anything else. He is the best thing I've ever bought and would hate for anything to happen to him. Cheers for putting my mind at rest and I'll keep checking my levels as always anyway.

The alarm checks the coolant level every time you switch on
