what else could it be, rough starting?

Hi, had glow plugs all changed but still having rough starting problems, is there anything else it might be? It's a 2.5 diesel if that helps, bit of smoke coming out on starting, is there a relay or cold start valve on these, and does anyone have a similar experience? Before changing the glow plugs it was taking 4 turns of the key and waiting for the light to go out, now it's starting on the first turn, but is a bit lumpy and juddery and the revs are at just above 600 (idle control gone??) Thanks for any advice :)

It is possible the vacuum solenoid for the cold start has gone... (One on the left.)

Does the idle control solenoid pull in when the plugs warm?? (brass looking thing below & right of the red circle/ring.)

What colour smoke? Any problems with coolant level dropping / rising?

what brand of glow plugs were fitted. some a certainly better than others.

I know where yer coming from... They do both kind of work together.. :D Certainly the one on the right holds the idle up a little longer on the from cold idle & brings the idle up when the AC is on too... When i was replacing a duff one on the right due to a noticeable drop in idle speed when the AC was on, & was swapping the black & white connection block over to the working solenoid on the left to see what did what.... I had no rough cold idle issue though due to the dysfunction of the solenoid on the right..

Ady, you got me doubting my head now... :?

Here's a link to what i discovered.. http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... m+solenoid

But then again, i maybe waffling on something totally unconnected to Bongomamma's starting issue...

Hi Bongomamma,

It would be worthwhile making sure that the glow plugs are still active even when the light goes out, they should still be on for a couple of minutes.

PS does the vehicle have any loss of pulling power (compression)

Cheers..

thanks for all your replies, the other half is going to check the things you have all mentioned, but I am sure that the loss of compression is related as from first starting in the morning it's is very slow to pull away but the almost "kicks down" after about 50yrds (with very consistent pressure on the accelarator) I also find it starts a bit better as long as I have the AC off ermm...it's a head scratcher

the reason it tends to feel odd after 50 yds is that as the revs go above 900 revs this turns off the glow plugs, and causes judder or loss of power,so to compensate the bongo kicks down a gear, this then picks up for a second or two then does it again.
it sounds like the cold start solenoids are not working as per jaylees link above, or the vac pipes to them are snapped off, check them carefully. or the connecting bar on the top of the glow plugs is shorting out to earth, check this is not touching the injector link pipes.also could be loose nut/s on the top of the glow plug/s.

are you going to the bash??

As northern bongolow points out the glowplugs switch off when the engine gets over 950 rpm so it's gotta be worth while checking your cold start idle setting hasn't been set to high to compensate for dodgy glowplugs, this is a 2 minuite job to do but must be done when the engine is stone cold, with the drivers seat lifted turn the ignition key on so that the ignition lights are active on the dash, you should see the coldstart mechanism activate towards the front of the engine, turn ignition off and you'll see that there is an adjustment screw locked with a 10mm nut, loosen the nut and wind the adjustment screw out until it has about 5mm sticking out of the business end, now go through the glow plug cycle and wait 3 seconds after the glow light has gone out, start the van and wind the adjustment screw in until she's at 900 rpm then lock the 10mm nut, keep us posted

P.S the idle adjustment screw is the one Jaylee has kindly circled in blue =D>
