Hi Bongo'ers,

How do I test the 2 radiator fans are working, so far I know this:

When I ground the temperature sensor on the engine the gauge reads maximum but the two radiator fans do not start.

In the fuse box to the right of the brake resovour there is nothing plugged into the part labeled 'main'. Is this the fan relay ?

I'm asking these questions as my van smells hot but is not using water or overheating.

There are several relays that control the Fans, but they are down by the battery, assuming here that your a Diesel;

and locations are;

I'm tapping this out on a tablet in a Dutch campsite so forgive me.. The rad fan fuse is in the box behind the starter battery. (Acording to a pdf of fuses i have on this thing.)

do you mean the sensor on top of the head at the front of the engine,if so this does not control the fans.

switch your aircon on, they should work then.

I have noticed when I turn on the air con there is a click sound and the radiator fan operates for short bursts. Is this normal?

Perfectly normal. Exactly what should happen.
So your fans ARE working.

Regardless of the operation of the air con I can not seem to get the 2 main radiator fans to start. Any ideas how I can force them to run or what controls them would be very helpfull.

Hi Matt,

The air con system could need re-gassed.You can check the operation of the fans by disconnecting the connector to the temperature sensor on the Side of the engine.

Hi, well I did ground the temperature sensor on the top of the engine which made the gauge read maximum but the fans did not start and I did have the engin running.

I know the air con system needs re gassing but I cant believe this would stop the engine cooling fans for working.

the sensor on top front of the head does the gauge only. the sensor that controls the fans is at the driverside rear of the head, above the starter motor, it has 2 wires to it. watch the plastic connection clip its brittle. if the end of the actual switch wobbles its knackered.
you will need to bleed the system if you remove this.

Hi Matt,

If the AC needs re-gassing this will stop the fan from coming on when you use THE AC.It doesn't stop the fans normal cooling function.If you are going to disconnect the sensor there is a plug connector about 150mm from the sensor.
(This is the sensor on the Side of the engine)..

I disconnected the sensor and the fans on the radiator worked

So when I test the sensor it reads 1.4k ohms across its terminals, do you know if this is about right ?
