handbrake adjustment

Hi. I am just trying to adjust the handbrake ready for MOT next Tuesday. I have followed the help sheet and have done this:

Jacked up, in Neutral, Handbrake off.

Tried to turn the wheels to line up the toothed wheel with grommet hole and they wont turn. The brakes are not sticking as I have some play in the system - for an inch or so the wheels will turn but then wont.

Any Ideas?

Should I just be using more force?
Should they turn fairly easily?

Thanks

Levon

If you have a plain rear diff, then with both rear wheels off the ground, one will turn backwards as the other turns forwards - or id one wheel is still on the ground as you turn the free wheel, the propshaft will also turn

If you have a limited slip rear diff (it will have a yellow sticker on it if it is LSD), both will turn the same way - with one wheel on the ground it may be difficult to turn a single rear wheel.

So, if you have 2WD and a plain diff you can jack up a single rear wheel and turn it.
If you have 2WD and a LSD, you need both rear wheels off the ground
If you have 4WD and a plain diff, you will need both rear wheels off the ground.
If you have 4WD and a LSD, then you will need at least 3 wheels off the ground.

Thanks Dave for the excellent reply. =D>

I have 4wd with LSD (I believe as I have a faded yellowy sticker on diff) so only having 2 rear wheels off ground explains my issue.

Will jack up a third and have a go then.

Thanks again, Levon.
