They're only a requirement on new vehicles from Feb 2011 onwards, so personally I wouldn't bother with the cost / effort (initially quite expensive for the smart ones Dandemann has fitted, although they've come down a lot in price now). They need to be switched on / off with the ignition and I think they should dim when the side lights are switched on.

I did treat myself to some LED front sidelights which are proper white ones, so they should be fine at MOT time.

So these lights are only needed on the front of your vehicle? Not the same then as the daytime driving lights that used to be fitted to old Saabs like the one I use to have on which both front and rear side lights went on and off with the ignition.

Saabs, Volvo's alike.......DRL's are now compulsory on New vehicles from February 2011 I think, these don't really do a lot but I think they bling it up abit

Hi,
Additional lamps/lights are not subject to the MOT test.
Cheers.

I fitted some Ring DRLs from Maplins for £20.They are on a switch so can be turned on/off but the Bongo flew through the MOT recently with no problems. Tester even commented on how nice they looked!

Let's admit that it's far more about bling than safety. In the early days of Volvos it seemed as though it was specifically to rub other peoples noses in it.
Don't strings of LEDs look naff, though, on prestige cars? Have people no taste whatsoever?

They have to be fitted but they don't have to be on.
Most new vehicles have the option to turn them off.
I agree with Tony, like the old Saabs and Volvos, doesn't seem to make sense to me to only have them on at the front.
I believe that in Austria they have found that the accident rate has increased since the legislation, may be coincidence, who knows.
