Tried the Temp Gauge mod as per the excellent fact sheet posted by Ben Bruce (short out the diode and add a 100 ohm resistor).
On the first short drive everything was fine - FSD a bit high for my taste, but a smooth reading which rose as I drove uphill and dropped when coasting down as expected.
On the next trip the gauge went haywire. Rapidly flitting up and down or twitching around the correct position.
Decided to revert to the original, but guage is still erratic. Sporadically flits to and fro, but averaging around the normal 11 oclock position. Always used to be completely steady. Does this sound like a bad connection or have I buggered up the gauge ?
Any advice appreciated.

It is very easy to fracture the fine copper wire by tightening the screws up too tight such that the brass pins rotate (as I found out first time round I fitted a Mason alarm
). It is possible the wires are just making contact, but when there is vibration, the connection is breaking. It is fixable with a fine soldering iron & a steady hand.

Hi,it could be,it would be worth checking that the connection on the sender unit is clean and tight.New S Wales 2010 wrote:Tried the Temp Gauge mod as per the excellent fact sheet posted by Ben Bruce (short out the diode and add a 100 ohm resistor).

all good advice above, if you find you naffed the gauge, which is likely, get a new one and just fit the 100 ohm on the outer face of the clock cluster but on the same terminals. this is a lot less invasive and works just the same.
usually most repairs increase the resistance on one of the legs of the circuit inside the gauge so can alter the values making it read oddly.
ive naffed a few of these and found that if you leave the zenner doide as is, and fit the 100 ohm to the outer track using small ring connections all will be well.
another of the problems i found was the silver coloured cup that protects the rear of the gauge can short via the bridge wire you put in. so check for this.
ben is on the forum as patandben, hes a very nice chap so see if you can shout him.
