bongo wont drive when reverse gear is selected

My 2.5 1996 mazda bongo will drive in forward gear, all working fine but when reverse gear is selected it beeps and selects fine but just revs and will not reverse. We have checked levels, selector and hold button all seem okay any ideas?????

Hi,
This might sound silly but,if you stop on a hill,in neutral hand brake off,does the vehicle freely roll backwards ?.
