Accessing full engine

Ok, I remove the seats and side panels (doddle) then I come to the top bit. Can anyone tell me the best way to remove this panel to access the rocker box? I know it comes off and have read that you can remove the bolts off the stuff attached to it and lean them back without disconnecting cables and stuff, what about the gear stick?
(2WD Manual Diesel)
No good stripping a perfectly good vehicle when you use it daily, need to be sure it can be put back together before you start. I have a week off next week and would love to get stuck into a few jobs. There's oil leaking down the block possibly from rocker gasket? I think it would be nice to have a few lines of advice from those who may have done it already!
Cheers

basically you just unbolt stuff and unplug the wires
you tie the gear shift up
and the complete hand brakes similar ends up hanging there

If the oil is under the drivers seat towards the front of the engine it is probably EGR gunk and is perfectly normal....are you having to top up the oil..

I have some oil here which i was worried about, one other thing though. Just behind where the gunk is there seems to have been a hole burnt in the cam belt cover...
Here is a pic showing where it is, ill try get a better one up tomorrow.
Don't mean to hijack the thread!

Same as mine but about 4 inches further to the left?

No, mine is directly behind that pipe! Struggle to see it, I'll put up a better picture tomorrow.
Either something has burnt it or rubbed through it. Quite a rough hole.

link didn't work for me.
Could the hole have ben caused by the cambelt snapping sometime in the past???

That looks like the EGR piping has been leaking at the flange, and passing hot exhaust gas out towards the engine, melting the cambelt cover.

Ill get the old girl running tomorrow and see if i can feel anything going towards the cover. Might have to access the full engine and get right in there and maybe make a metal cover for the hole as id imagine its detrimental to the cam belt if its hot enough to melt through that thick plastic. Does the EGR pipe have a gasket on that connection? I might try give it a little tighten to see if that will help.
And thank you.

it just has a thin tin shim in there, you can see the edge of it in the pic.
be careful when tightening the bolts, they are usually stripped, hense the problem.
the cover could have been damaged from inside by the belt trapping a foreign body up against the casing and getting the object hot then it burns its way out (not that ive ever done this).
