Weird noise when drive selected (2.5td auto 2wd)

Hi All,

This morning I noticed a strange tinkling/knocking noise come from under the Bongo - At idle and in neutral or reverse there is no noise, however when I select Drive I can hear this noise at idle - I had someone keep their foot on the brake (handbrake on!) while I had a look underneath and its definitely a noise coming from the gearbox - its a sort of tinkling light knocking noise. Not sure if the noise is there when I'm driving and revs are higher but I dont think so (yet).

As far as I know fluid level is ok (will check later though) - gear change is normal and drives fine (always been impressed at the smooth change on my Bongo). Fluid changed last year (didnt get round to a filter clean though). A search only brings up more dire noises than this one.

Has anyone had anything like this? Is it a sign of impending ATF doom?

cheers,

Steve

Possibly converter drive plate cracked or loose converter bolts. Not heard of it before on one of these though.

is it a slight knock, like someone knocking on a door really lightly (and slowly)?
the sound on my van seems to come from down by my right leg - I always thought it sounds like a relay flipping. I think it only comes up when in drive and with the brakes on...

Hi,

Cheers - I only noticed the noise when I stopped to give someone a lift and they opened the front passengers door - if anything it sounds like an exhaust heat shield but definitely seemed to be coming from the gear box.

Converter plates - is this a gearbox out job; fix existing box or better to get s/h part? Can an auto box be changed DIY - there seems to be plenty of space? Then again, I'm not that far from Discount trucks and their yard full of dead Bongo's...

cheers,

Steve

Converter drive plate is a 'box out job, but checking TC bolts to drive plate isn't. S/H part would be fine if this is your problem. As I said it isn't common at all on these vehicles so you need to be sure before you hoik the trans out. The drive plate has nothing to do with the transmission itself, it takes the place of the flywheel on a manual vehicle.

DIY job? In my opinion, no. There is a lot involved with fitting an auto correctly & I have had many a rebuilt trans damaged on fitting by people who know not what they are doing. I will of course be shouted down on this but what is OK for one DIYer is a nightmare for another.

Of course I am only saying it could be this, correct diagnosis is the key here.
