2.5d 2wd Bongo making a strange chirping/screeching noise

Hi all,

I've posted a request for Bongo mechanic/garage near to me in Milton Keynes in the 'Chilterns, Thames Valley & Cotswolds' section, but in the meantime I thought I'd post a query here in case anyone has come across this problem before or might have an idea to help :

My 2.5d 2wd Bongo is making a strange chirping/soft screeching noise under no load whilst stationary and in park/neutral. However the noise then quietens down and stops when drive engaged and throttle applied and you're away moving ... not sure if they all do this or it's a belt or water pump on the way out?

Maybe its still happening under drive but I can't hear it because of wind noise etc?

Does that make sense?

Cheers
Glenn

Try putting the steering on full lock and see if the noise disappears.

My first guess would be alternator belts. You can check this by spraying them with water from a trigger spray or an old washing up liquid bottle. If it goes quite for a little while, then replace the belts. Next option is broken exhaust stud, usually no. 1 at the front of the engine. Try a search for 'exhaust AND stud' for more details.

You haven't left the winter warmup switch on have you ? to the right of the steering wheel next to the rear heater switch #-o

alternator pulley/bearing, or crankshaft pulley, as its made up of two parts bonded together(they come loose).
after you have tried simons tests and its still there  .

my money is on belts or manifold stud.

well it appears to be the alternator belts as spraying soapy water onto them stops the noise for a little while.

so thanks for the suggestions, thankfuly its not studs etc

next I need to see if can adjust the belt tension to cure it ... or if it needs new belts

thanks again

It's probably worth getting a new pair of belts as they are quite cheap as you don't know how old the current ones are. If they've been slipping for a while you may find that the belts will have a glazed surface so will continue to squeak even if tightened up.

I'm having the same problem - am I right in thinking that if the belts are worn, the chirping sound will probably be loudest and most pronounced when the engine is cold?

I'm going to have a go at the soapy water trick and see if that helps

Thanks for the on-going advice!

'am I right in thinking that if the belts are worn, the chirping sound will probably be loudest and most pronounced when the engine is cold?'
yeh I would tend to agree with that ....

'I'm going to have a go at the soapy water trick and see if that helps'
that highlighted it for me ... well wd40

The noise then disappeared when a mechanic tightened the belts up.
