Starting problems when cold.

hi all, having a few problems with my bongo starting. It turns but won't fire up, when it does finally start it feels almost like it is flooded. I have had a look on here an as it coincided with the cold weather I bought a new set of glow plugs and fitted them today. It took a while too start but then ran ok, I put that down too it being sat in the cold unused for a week and a half, the bongo ran perfectly after that an started fine after leaving it for half hour or so. But when I went too use it again a few hours later I had the starting problem again, anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, as far as I know, because it does start in the end, an once it's warm seems too run fine. Unless that isn't a way too tell for sure

check the thin pipes that supply the coldstart solenoid switches, you will have had to move them to do the glowplugs, they are the two valves next to the glowplug rail.

The ones with the vacumn type hoses on by the rear two glow plugs? What is it I should be checking them for? Thanks

broken connections on the inlets/outlets usually snap off when brittle.
or valves not clicking when 12 volts put to them.

...and I assume you are waiting for the orange glow light to go out on the dash before turning the starter motor (some say its best to leave it 15 secs or so after the light goes out before turning the key). Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs - best taught twice than not at all (and this one has happened before) 8)

Hi again, thanks for the suggestions, bongo ran an started fine last week till Friday, an now wont start again! I've checked the glow plug rail an that's gettin just under 12 volts too it, I can also hear both the valves clicking when the ignition is on. The engine turns over but just won't seem too fire up, any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot

Hmmm. I'm not a techie but I can't see anyone having mentioned on this thread whether fuel supply might be a possible issue. Is there any possibility of this being relevant. It sounds like it runs fine once started, but won't start after standing for a while. Is there anything in the mechanics and layout of the fuel pump and lines that could allow fuel to siphon back into the tank, leaving an airlock and pump priming problem (I have a very vague feeling something like this might have been discussed on here way back when but...)

Hi,
The simplest way to check if the engine is getting fuel, is to slacken of an injector pipe and crank the engine.

Make sure that you shield your eyes.

Cheers

Taken a pipe off one of the injectors, there is a a trickle of fuel there, certainly not enough too worry about shielding my eyes, where would be the best place too go from here? Any suggestions? Ive been running it this week with no fuel cap as it was suggested they clog and can cause problems, could it off sucked air in this way an cause a problem now? Dirty fuel filter?

Did you crank the engine?

Hi, yeah I turned the engine over, as u turn the key the ignition on it makes what I would describe as a hiss, an a click from the relays, also the cable on what I'm guessing is the fuel pump pulls up. But there is not a great deal of fuel coming from the pipe on top of the injector as I crank it.

Thanks

Hi,i am not sure that you have the correct pipe, the pipe/s that you want are one of the 4 coming out of the rear of the pump.

Cheers.
