Bongo Fury

So.

Fuel Gauge permanently reading nothing, having had a few weeks of varying readings.

I have tried connecting the fuel tank rim to the chassis ( and can get a good earth) but this doesn't remedy the problem.

I've got a 321 Away side conversion which - as far as I can tell is sitting on the access hatch.

So my option is only to drop the tank.(or more likely get a garage to do the job)

However, before I do that is there any way I can check the wiring to the instrument panel is ok and the gauge is working?

Your sender is earthed to the tank, then the tank to chassis....

Looks like the latter is sorted, but you may need the former done too?? Personally i'd earth the sender straight to chassis... (cut out the middle man.)

Yes there is a way to test the actual gauge... With the ignition on, undo the white two wire connector to the sender, short the two pins with an inch length of wire, give a couple of minutes & the gauge should rise to full.... You will know the gauge is OK if this happens..

You mean the one little white plug on top of the sender which he can't reach then....

Yep..!? unfortunately i do Geoff... There are many ways to do this earth mod.. Mine worked like this..



Though if my tank wasn't grounding i would have taken the second wire off to the chassis somewhere..!

Yer not gonna like me for saying this... But it maybe a good idea while your in there to check on the fuel send & return hoses too..? Mine looked OK, but the 16 year old rubber was perishing from the inside & i replaced em..!

... Bearing in mind they will be (by all accounts) checking fuel lines in the new MOT for chaffing & leaks???

I was hoping there was some way of testing this without dropping the tank ( access from above is a nono as the side kitchen was helpfully installed ( seemingly) without any access hatch)

There maybe another way to do this without too much of the hassle...?

I'm wondering if there is a way to tap into the sender earth wire & run to ground at a more accessible place from under the van, further along the sender loom..?

The only place's are at the plug/socket X22 down in the drivers area, or on the back of the display itself C1-01;

The pins are shown on the plug/socket diagrams below the main circuit, and the location of X22 is on the next page, the pins are on this page;

all you need do is earth the wire from the gauge itself to make it read max. value, but neither location is that easy to get at, and I've not heard of a gauge going faulty to date - but always a first!

Gonna sound dumb now: where in the 'drivers area'? where is that exactly? :S

I just drilled the flange around the fuel tank (apparently there are already some holes in it that I could have used ) and ran a wire to earth - whole job took less than 5 minutes and gauge worked fine after that
