There are two reasons why you would have two batteries;
First is that the vehicle is from the COLD northern Japan, where the second battery is fitted in parallel to increase the starter motor capacity.
Second, is that it has been fitted as a Leisure Battery (L/B), normally most leisure batteries don't need the Ignition on at all, but power the internal lights and accessories all the time for camping etc.

Would say the first then as it looks standard so I'm going to flatten both battiries then if I park up for too long

do you have a button by your right knee with a pic of an engine on it?
If so yes its a cold start battery
You can disconnect it from the main battery feed and fit a split charge relay kit and use it as a lesure battery it will do the job even if its not a "propper" leisure battery it will act as one

I have this kit fitted to mine and its the most popular kit available, its amazingly easy to fit
