Bongo Fury

Hi folks, just come back into Bomgo ownership having bought a 2000 4WD 2.5l from an importer in Birmingham. Had it delivered to Aberdeen and it didn't miss a beat, however it's now let me down on very first journey! I have had it recovered to local garage who do all my work but it will be Monday before it can be looked at.
Car was driving fine and then revs started to climb a little without any increase in speed. When I tried to accelerate to keep up with traffic it would not change down or up. Stopped at some lights and as I tried to pull away it was very slow to move away and revs went very high. It crawled along road with engine revving highly and only just made it off main road but would not move any further although engine would rev freely. All this accompanied by a "hot clutch" smell.
Now feeling very sorry for myself and also very angry about the whole thing! At this moment in time I am wishing I had never set my eyes on a Mazda!
Therefore any opinions on what the problem might be would be very appreciated!

May sound daft but had you got it in the HOLD position

What level is your ATF at?

If you smelled it 'hot', sounds like you might as well change it anyway. Simple enough job, but best done with a Pela pump if you have one or can borrow one.

I've got one in Elgin you can borrow, but it sounds like you won't be driving that far until it's sorted.

Under the drivers seat ontop of the fuel pump is the TPS ( Throttle Position Sensor ) its held inplace by a grub screw at each end check that it hasn't come loose.

Prior to this ring the dealer and find out about the warranty.

As for never setting eyes on a Mazda thats a bit harsh fella , mines called l'oreal cos she's cost me a small fortune but she's worth it

Thanks for replies so far.
Car was driving along normally and at no time was the HOLD button on.
Did not check levels if anything before car was uplifted so cannot comment on the other suggestions however would these be responsible to gradually to totally lose drive in approx half a mile? There were no clues to it happening, no sounds or vibrations, just a very quick but gradual rise in revs as I tried to keep up with the traffic in front.
Car is at the garage now so not handy to go and check things out. Will hopefully get some feedback on Monday if garage has the time.

Usually a reputable dealer will do a PDI and service before delivery ... Did they drive the 425ish miles to deliver it to you ..??

Sound like low transmission fluid .. or fluid that is in need of replacement ...

Car was fully MOTd, under sealed, belt changed and serviced prior to being released. Which is partly why I am so peed off about it. Would lack of tranny fluid have such a sudden and dramatic effect?
I would be very happy if it's as straight forward as that!

i would look to fuel filter or filter in the pump inlet if it has one.
as it tries to hunt for fuel while pulling the bongo weight it drops power and stops it changing up. when not under load(in park it may rev up freely.)

you say its been undersealed recently, have they sprayed over and blocked the fuel tank breathers. or is the fuel cap ok(venting,) try it with the fuel cap off.

dont know about thesmelly bit though .

Surely the supplier gives some kind of warranty to cover this. Contact them asap and keep us posted. I'm in my 6th year of trouble free bongoing so Mazda certainly get my vote. It's the car that's duff, not the brand. It may prove to be something relatively straightforward. Fingers crossed and good luck

The garage were the very first people I called and have since emailed.
They are saying not to worry and they will cover any expenses, howeve it's more the inconvenience of it all and probably most of all, the severe dent that my enthusiasm took for owning another Bongo! Fingers crossed everything will sort itself out for the better!

yes sounds possible doesnt it, that would make the box not know whether it was coming or going.

Not sure if that is a possibility as when I finally stopped, I was on a slight incline and the car would start rolling with ease when I took my foot off the brake, so I do not think the brakes are stuck on, plus the problem just started out of the blue while driving normally.
???? Still a mystery and my local garage did not get a chance to look at it today unfortunately!

Sorry to say but it sounds, from you description, like clutch slip. If that is the case then you are looking at either a trans rebuild or a replacement from somewhere.
