Something loose in gearbox - loud noise

Wife got home from work, after parking realised there is now big noise coming from the gearbox. Like a very loud bicycle bell (or maybe a bicycle bell crossed with a cow bell).
Sounds like something is loose and banging around in there. Its there when in neutral and all the gears, might disappear when driving but only drove it 200 yards so difficult to tell – it drives fine including reverse. There is 120,000ish on the clock so the old girl is getting on a bit. Any ideas.

Is it defo in the gear box or is something rattling underneath the vehicle and your mistaking it for inside the gearbox, for ease i'd whip the front seats up and check for something loose causing the metalic rattle your describing, exhaust clamp loose exhaust hitting the underside of the vehicle or even rattling on the back axel, eliminate all other possabilities first.

I got that sort effect when a fan belt broke and the broken belt was flailing around and catching the alternator fins. It still drove ok because there are 2 belts...

Found it! (after getting it up on ramps) It was the exhaust bracket that attaches to the back of the transfer box sheered off and bouncing off the exhaust pipe. Phew!
