Bongo Fury

Hello, this is my very first forum request ever...
My bongo is suffering from a loss of power ( 2.0 petrol auto ) and very bad fuel usage, did 210 miles and it cost me £70..!!!. It has been to the garage and it might be a suspect , mass air flow meter, but the garage cant be to sure. Can any one help me with this. Thank you

Check the "fat" pipe going to the Mass air flow meter....it may have a split in it.

Mind you....if your garage has looked at it ...I would have expected them to check that possibility out.

Any chance of a bigger hint for us mortals than "fat" pipe going to the Mass air flow meter Haydn, maybe a piccy with a big arrow? I only get 16mpg in the cold with very short journeys, and 22-25 on a long run if wearing slippers

At the top you have the MAF 13-210B and the Air filter and air intake connects on the "Z" joint.

Welcome aboard. Has the economy got worse over time, or has it always been like that? Have you worked out the actual MPG by filling it to the top and noting the mileage when next refilling it to the top? Some dealers refer to the 2.0 as a 'super economy' engine, but I'm not convinced there's any significant improvement over the 2.5 petrol or diesel engines. I've only driven one, but it had to be pushed pretty hard to get reasonable performance out of it which tends to counteract any minor reductions in consumption.

Other things to consider include the air filter, oil and filter change, new spark plugs etc which will help to ensure the engine is in good running order. Also, other factors that will influence economy are use of air conditioning and binding brakes.

That milage MPG is about right for a 2.0 ltr Petrol around town. I have had mine now for 3 years
and has a full service every 5000 miles superb motor no problems whatsoever.
I have kept a very accurate check on Fuel comsuption over that period 18000 miles see Fuelly. On a distance
Motorway run I can nearly double that milage and get 400 miles from a full tank.

Fully agree with you there Driver.
Ive had mine 15 months and brim it every fill up IN THAT TIME, and work out the MPG.....Id also say its about right.
It isnt a very economical vehicle,underpowered and not in the same league as my 2 previous 2.5 TD`s.Still love it though

The tell tale signs of running rich are usually,sooty/black plugs,sooty/ black exhaust pipe,cleaned out wallet.

Thank you for all the replys, here is some more info about my problem.The 210 miles was a long drive to south wales, £70 there and £70 back, the loss of power we have only really just noticed, being overtaken by every car on even the smallest of inclines, before when we where going up a small hill you could put your foot down and away we went, but now that doesnt happen, it just struggles at a slow speed. but when you are back on the straight away we go.I have also noticed that just driving normaly along the road there is a loss of power. We are going back to the garage we bought are bongo from and they are going to try another air flow and see what happens, any more thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi,have a look at the inside of your tail pipe and see if it is sooty(black).

has it got a tad noisier ??. if so it may be the down pipe on the exhaust, the first bit after the manifold, this is a twin wall bit. the inner may have holed and the gasses get out into the outer layer and make it sound louder, this also shows as a drop in performance.
