As in the title, I was checking levels today and got distracted by a neighbour and forgot to refit it. The wife then went out to shops and back about 15-20 miles. coolant was lost as there was a trail but didnt overheat and seems ok. i found the cap and temp seems ok. Should I worry about anything. I will refill the coolant in the morning when cold.

it should be fine, just fill it up.take note on how much you put in, if it emptied the exp tank it may need bleeding.
i would fill it to the level (or above) while its still warm though to avoid the coolant cooling to the extent that it drops to a level that lets air in to the front heater as this is connected just out of view to the small diameter pipe that leaves the exp tank.

Did you mean the radiator cap or the expansion bottle cap?
Until I had a Bongo I habitually undid radiator caps to top up and check for nasties like oil in the coolant.
As old habits die hard, I have put a Dymo label alongside saying " Do not remove cap". That's because it looks like being the quickest way to an airlock.

It was the expansion cap, but topped it back up, about 0.5l and everything seems fine.
