Bongo Fury

Hi got a 2002 Tintop which is completely baffling me. I have read other threads but not found the exact problem.

With the Bongo at normal operating temperature and under braking the revs drop well below the normal idle and the dash goes red & all power fails, including the power steering which is fun!

The Bongo then won't restart instantly and takes a good minute of starter motor and pumping of the accelerator.

It also has a starting problem. Sometimes it starts instantly other times after about a minute or two of trying.

Looking forward to some thoughts.

If an answer can't be found on here, why not call Discount Trucks in Newbury for advice and - if the old girl can make the trip - a sortie over to them for a cure. If they can't fix it, not sure who could. It doesn't sound so much expensive as just baffling, and DC's charges are v reasonable i'm told + they are excellent. Good luck getting it sorted.

Thanks for that. I have it booked into a friendly Bongo garage after the New Year. They own their own Bongos so I am hopeful they can solve the problem. Just interested to find out prior to then.

Tried to start it with the cap off and it fired up first time. Now could have been a fluke but it may be worth looking into! What do I do next??

assuming the caps an original wash it out

as its has a breather might be blocked up

can someone link him to the thread which simon jones did/contributed to recently, it showed a link to the position of the fuel tank breathers which may also be relevant.

thanks for that mate but its not the one i was thinking of.
there was a thread within the last month that simon put some links to lush projects on, i think jaylee contributed too.
it showed the actual locations of the tank breathers on the v6 and diesel.

i am begining to think the fuel cap blockage may be one of the many bongo urban myths, as i see it, but may be wrong, it may breath a little through the cap but the main venting is done at the breathers in the links posted. waxoiling/undersealing may contribute to these getting blocked, then the cap alone cannot cope ???
anyone any thoughts.

Ady - I don't know about Bongos, but I did have it happen a couple of times some years ago on an old Triumph and it was a known irritation. It would happen on a full tank, even though they were supposedly vented by a pipe. Removal and replacement of the fuel cap would get it running again, but as I remember the culprit was a rubber section in the vent pipe.
I never proved this answer myself because I sold the car with the problem.
