i want to change the backlight on my instrument panels from green to blue.

are the bulbs for dash cluster and digital a/c all the same as clock [ bulb 509t ] and is it just a case of swapping colour or are there filters involved/different sizes etc ?

The bulbs are clear, but there are a couple of green filters which provide the ambient green light and these could potentially be changed. However, the light-guide on the rear of the dials is green tinted so they will always look green regardless of the colour of the bulbs.

Thanks Simon, what is the light guide you refer to ?

Also when peeps fit the white dial dash does that give an opportunity to change the colour ?

The light guide is a piece of transparent plastic which spreads the light over the rear of the dials so you dont get hotspots of illumination where the bulbs are. On the rear of the dials there is a green filter & this helps to make the markings show up as green. If you change to the white 'plasma' dials they have electroluminescent panels sandwiched behind the dial & the light guide & it is these that generate the blue light.

I'll post a picture later on.

The back lighting on my dials (From memory.) had four T10 capless white filament bulbs with a green rubber sheath over the actual bulb that gave the hue..! Mine is a 95 plate tintop, so may be different to the later shape..

I replaced mine with red led's at night the yellow needles have a VW glow... (Well... Ish!!??)

The plasma dials can also be dimmed to taste...

...& ironically, with a switch changed to green.! :P

Thanks to both Simon and Jaylee for info , I'm liking those dials so .........

looks like it's white plasmas then !

Only place i've seen them is ebay at £45 + £4 p/p , is that about right ?

What about the digital a/c and the auto gearshift backlight - are they bulbs or filters ?

just want the main items to be blue , the odd switch i can put up with as green.

i can always rip em out and have a look but if someone's already been there [ and i'm sure they have ! ] it seems daft not to ask !

The gearshift backlight has a T10 bulb below it, but you can get a plasma display for it that fades & changes colour with the main dials....
