From the
EGR FAQ:
"The EGR is the Exhaust Gas Recirculating valve - it recycles some of the exhaust gas back through the engine to reduce emissions. Unfortunately, although this may have been an effective pollution reducing measure from new, this seems to cover the inside of the inlet manifold with black goo leading to the air inlet being restricted & black smoke on acceleration. The valve can also get jammed open and/or leak, lots have disabled or removed theirs by various means."
Edit: Right or wrong, I'm planning on blanking mine in the next week or so...

Why is it there?
Because it has to be for the vehicle to be sold.
Why blank it off?
Because it isn't needed (or it's operation checked in any way) once the vehicle has been sold.
The gas that is recirculated is full of crap and as said above coats the inside of your inlet manifold with the said crap. So much can be deposited that the inlet manifold can get almost blocked.

Well I've blanked mine off and left the pipe off as well. Cant see the point in blanking it off at both ends and leaving it on.
It gives a lot easier access to the glowplugs etc if I should ever need it.
The amount of crap that had built up in it and associated pipes was unbelievable and undoubtably contributed towards the oil leak that I had down the side of the block.
I'll put some pictures up when I get the chance.
Incidentally, it was a lot easier to get at all the bolts holding the pipe on this later drive by wire than the earlier Bongo we had.
I took the elbow off the end of the manifold and cleaned that all out as well and resealed everything with Hylomar (wonderful stuff, used it for years) Leak seems to have stopped now and the Bongo does feel a bit smoother with the EGR blanked off.
Not done enough miles yet to ascertain if its helped fuel consumption at all.

No idea. The internet's basically witchcraft. Best not to examine it too closely!

When you order the plates make sure you tell Allan what year the Bongo is. The early and drive by wire are slightly different.

The photos/fitting instructions he supplies with the plates are different for the later model.
