Low profile tyres

Hi we are new Bongonauts of some two months. We bought a 1999 2L/2WD full conversion which has had its suspension lowered by 3". Its also running on 225/40 ZR18 low profiles tyres on alloys which measure 19.5" diameter. The van looks great on this set up but its not doing our spines any good on the less that perfect roads here in Norfolk. I am a bit reluctant to put the suspension back to original spec (cost and looks) and wonder if just changing the tyres for non low profile would help. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

Have you checked the load rating on your tyres? - they are probably too low, which could invalidate your insurance #-o They should be at least 96.
You are about to find the problem with finding 18" tyres, with the correct load rating, at a reasonable price, especially in this area.
You can use http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html to check what size tyres you could use - the normal size, for a Bongo, is 215/65x15.

Ouch, that sounds a very firm or rather jarring ride.

Looks lovely, but that's all. I'm on 18in alloys and run on 225/40 R18 the tyres are xl rated to 99 and the ride is fine. I also have a lpg conversion which adds weight to the bongo as well. Check out ACCELERA tyres and do an online search for best price. I found www.blackcircles.com gave me the best price. The tyres are ace and the ride is fine, even with a full load of family and camping gear. The only grind is speed bumps - but that's due to our lpg tank being in the rear where the spare wheel normally goes.

I did think about lowering the bongo too, however after search the forum and some rather pointed advice from our bongo mechanic I didn't go ahead. Turns out that the suspension system will need work and parts every year to keep it going!

To improve the ride you could fit 17 in rims and have a larger depth, say 225/50 R17 to give a bit more cushioning on those nasty roads.

Thanks for the replies and tips re my alloywheels/low profile tyres. Will take into account the advice before I make a decision. Re the lowered suspension, I was worried that being lowered by 3" would cause a problem but apart from the firm ride (havent driven another Bongo to compare), it hasnt been a problem and it can be put back to original spec if necessary. It doesnt half suit the van though so I will concentrate on the tyres/wheels for now. Many thanks.
