Such pain .... I had the boot up on a camp site packing away and also trying to help a girl who had a flat battery with jump leads on mine ... reversed and ouch straight into a tree ... I've had bumps before (2k worth in my newBMW ) but this is the first time I've felt soooo upset about a dented piece of metal :-( ..,. It's just off centre and so the lip won't sit in place and door won't shut ... any ideas ( can't post pics but can email them ) if this is repairable please

Bums. Will the tailgate shut onto the first latch or not at all? We were rear-ended recently and the tailgate won't shut properly, goes onto the first latch so it can be locked but it won't latch properly so the alarm always thinks the tailgate is open.

Bell Hill to the rescue I fear.... :(

Nope won't even go on first latch - does it mean a new door then ?!?

Might be able to be straghtened so that it works for the moment while you source a replacement, if you can post a pic up we could give a better opinion. A bit of brute force & ignorance should be able to get you lockable at least.

Need pics realy but mine had a dent in tailgate when i bought it. I put a piece of wood either side and clamped it tight to straighten it filler did the rest. Like Muz said brute force as a temp measure. [-o<

If the tailgate was open when you bashed it, it is possible that the hinges are bent, which could be part of why it won't shut.

Unless the metal is split it will probably pull out, so get an expert opinion before looking for a replacment. Find a local bodyshop, idealy a small one who does a lot of work direct for owners, rather than an insurance reccomended one which will just replace everything. I use one who does a lot of work for taxi fleets and can unbend almost anything.

Take it and get an assessment of the damage. A lot can be achieved by a bit of brute force expertly applied. Since you have non metalic paint it should be easier to match in the respray.
