New brakes needed

I took my Bongo in for its' annual service and my garage told me that I need new brake discs and pads. They also said it would cost just over £600.00!!!!!

Do Bongo's require solid gold discs?
Is this a reasonable price?
Is it a labour intensive job?
Am I being ripped off?

Find a new garage  Whereabouts are you? if you stick your location in your profile by clicking on "user control panel" top right of the screen, local recommendations or assistance may be forthcoming.

to do the job properly is quite a time consuming job, i usually allow an hour per wheel, and the parts alone if good ones could be a third of that,so in reality it isnt that bad if they strip and clean/ lube everything and do it correctly.
you could do it yourself if confident, but its the only thing between you and the boot of the car infront, so you pays yer money, or not.

If they use Genuine Mazda parts and do a proper job it will be in that ball park.

You could ask them to use Camel Dung parts, will be a lot cheaper. :)

got mine from fleabay new discs and pads £140 quid did it on a nice sunny day and cleaned and coppersliped where necessary then painted all the calipers silver. Probably could have done it in a couple of hours if not messing about with the paint. Oh and the handbrake adjustment is a bit fiddly.

Hat's off to you.

If I attempt this, I will definitely end up in a nasty crumpled mess in the back of a 40' trailer.

I'll just have to pay top dollar and leave it to people who know what to do.

Hi Blue Steel,

You could ask the garage for a detailed estimate IE..list and cost of parts/labour (hours)at hourly rate.

Cheers.

Is there anybody near ie. family that are any good with cars. They are just a standard setup nothing special. If you fancy a day trip to Peterborough I can help. You bring the parts i`ll supply the tea

That's such a kind offer. Thank you. But I've asked the garage to revisit his figures and will call him tomorrow.

At least someone has mentioned that £600 sounds about right for a non-DIY job so I don't feel ripped-off.

Thanks to everyone. You've all been so helpful.
