New filters, new plugs, new injectors, Egr blanked and still smokey laboured starting issues. Garage think it could be a fuel pump issue.Any alternative suggestions or ideas where I can locate a new diesel pump or get mine reconditioned(based S Wales)...... do I need to be sitting down before I get the bill ?
Thanks

Is your pump leaking ? cos if it aint broke don't fix it

my pump was reconditioned earlier this year as it was leaking from the input shaft £450 inc removal and refitting and mine still some times smokes on start up if i don't let the glow plugs heat properly

dont know if it is leaking but starting up esp after a few days non use is an issue.Doesn't want to "catch" unless you give the throttle some wellie then I get about a minutes worth of smoke and it settles down.New plugs havn't solved the issue .Thanks for the input though

what age bongo have you got.
have you checked /tested the cold start solenoids.
if its an early pump is it wet under the little domed cap on the middle lower face.or at the rear where the injector pipes exit the pump
is the little pipe connected to the air elbow from the pump top.
is your oil level raised(pump leaking into sump).
banjo filter,or does it run ok once started.
some have found that the fuel filter/housing has been faulty and letting air in.check the fuel lines.

Are you sure the glow plugs are being fed? Could be a glow plug relay problem or the fuseable link

Don't know if it's relevant, but when we changed spenners head (including cam belt), we had a similar issue. The engine started OK and ran fine on tickover, but when we increased the revs, it ran very lumpy and we got lots of smoke. A wizard (helicopter engineer) fixed this by altering the pump timing. Simple to do and now runs sweetly.
Reason for mentioning this is that I noticed from one of your earlier posts that you may have had head problems? head change? cambelt change? Don't know why a new cambelt should change the pump timing, but this was our experience.

thanks all for advice. think I need to seek a specialist garage as my local has given up.In response to some of your queries my Van did overheat but got away with new pipes as head/gaskets etc was intact.Mine's a 97 2wd 2.5td. with 145000 kms on the clock.Oil levels seem good and my garage had no idea what a banjo filter was.May be a case of a trip to Bell hill(100 mile round trip) which is the nearest Bongo specialist.

Was the cam belt changed in the etc? cos this seems to have been the factor in our case.

As others have said and from what you say it looks like there is an leak somewhere in the system allowing air into the fuel system that enters the pump after a period of down time.
You could try fitting a pump close to the tank to pressurise the system to see if it helps, it will also show up any leaks before the pump as the system normally works under a vacuum.
