Bongo Fury

My brother has a Landrover freelanded which he's taken out the rear propshaft to convert from full time 4 wheel drive to 2. He was advised by his mechanic that it would improve drive for 'on road' long distance 'normal' driving. He intends to pop it back in for the winter when he would need four wheel drive. The question is can this be done on the bongo. Tyre and fuel consumption seem high and if we could get more miles on the tyres and better fuel consumption without too much compromise - great. Ours is a 'p' reg diesel with abs. I can't see a reason not to try but has anyone any experience of this or indeed have any view as to either why it may or may not be a good idea

Basically, you remove the front propshaft and make the Bongo RWD only. Might gain 1 or 2 mph, but I doubt you'd see a huge difference TBH.

IIRC, most times this has been done it has been as a temp measure to get around a problem with the front axle.

Do you know if it improves tyre wear we do seem to go through them, and we have check allignment several times

If you are having issues with 'castling' on the front tyres, converting to RWD will sort this out. You shouldn't be going through tyres too quickly, what sort of mileage are you getting from a set?
