Hi Guys,

Just wondered if anyone knows if there was ever an answer to the 'whining transmission' topic?? ............. Ours has started what can only be described as an intermittent whining, buzzing noise from the auto gear box (I think) that has only recently had a £1600 recon job (inc converter) following an internal self destruct episode!!!

It does it mainly going up hills whilst labouring hard and droppin from 4th to 3rd gear at about 2500 rpm. It sounds like something is slipping in the box, a bit like a garden strimmer noise, and only lasts a few seconds.

I want as much info as poss befor i go back to my man who rebuilt the box.

does it sound like an electrical relay clicking at speed,
have you checked the oil level.(engine running in park,gearbox warmed up). if the oil level is low it could be the pump pumping nothing,if you see what i mean.

No it doesnt sound like an electrical relay, it sounds more like a slipping belt (something like a garden strimmer being turnrd on under the Bongo) and i'm pretty sure ive seen the rev counter increasing like a slipping clutch would make it, as it happens. ATF level is fine. This was the first trip away (300 miles around Devon) following auto gear box rebuild and i checked the level during the trip....
It only seems to happen when the engine (& gear box) are working hard up hills and usually as it drops from 4th to 3rd gear.....

I'd just get it back to the guy who rebuilt it asap & explain the symptoms rather than waiting for an answer on here, if there is a problem, you could be making it worse.

it sounds to me like the box is fine, but its the torque converter thats slipping.
its the bit in between the gearbox and the engine, it is chain driven,and is a series of clutch plates that slip/grip in oil. if these plates are worn, or you have lost oil things may slip under load.
not a massive job, it just bolts on to the flywheel, but the box has to come out to do it.
not really related to the gearbox rebuild so dont go shouting at him,but is a crucial part of the drivetrain so needs sorting.

Thanks guys for all your input. Its going back on Wednesday for my gear-box man to listen to, (so knowing my luck it will behave itself and won't make any wrong sounds!)

Ady, i just checked the bill and it clearly states that the 'Converter' was re-conned also. So this i am guessing is the torque converter???!!

no its not chain driven you dipstick thats the transfer box . but the rest is right i hope.

If 4 wheel drive, then the transfer box is potentially a source for noise. On the only occasion I used a skinny spare wheel, I noticed a different noise which could have been the diffs or transfer box compensating for the slight variation in rolling circumference.

Do the revs come up when this happens? If so it is flaring on the downshift. As has been said earlier the first thing to do is report it to the rebuilder & get the vehicle in to them ASAP. If they are reputable & the noise is from the transmission then it will be sorted. I was interested to hear that it did it before the rebuild, albeit to a lesser degree, so don't be surprised if it isn't from the transmission. I can't see how it can be the torque converter as it would be noisy at other times.

Noises are generally impossible to diagnose without hearing them. Ask 10 people to describe a certain noise & you will get 10 wildly differing descriptions, with your own being different again!

As I say, its only fair to get it back to the rebuilder ASAP, he probably won't thank you if you go back saying 'I've been on the forum & they say it's so & so' as anyone with knowledge will have to hear the noise to make an informed diagnosis.

thanks guys fo all info, Bongo is currently residing back with repair-man who is being very helpful but i just wish it would make the noises for him!!!! He is 20 miles away and it drove there faultlessly of course....... seems to only want to make the noises up hill working hard. (2 weeks ago in wales it did something slightly different as follows; we had a full load of family and luggage and were travelling along a duel carriageway at 70mph that started to go uphill. The speed dropped and as the gears dropped to 3rd the revs climbed to 4000 (from about 3000) but it didnt seem to give any more pull. After a couple of seconds a surge of power could be felt, without the revs incresing, a bit like the afterburners being switched on on Concorde!)
Any thoughts to add to the confusion??!!
