Bongo Fury

Hi there in bongo land.Me again.I got my bongo converted sept last year,since i have noticed a whining noise coming from the rear near side,or around there ish.This only comes on at 50 mph.If i throttle off it disapears and comes back on when i throttle on.As i say it has been there for a while and is no worse.This noise also seams to go after 60 mph.It is not loud noisy but you know it is there.Any idea,s would not go a miss.Tyres brakes are all fine.Hope its not the diff .Again does not sound like a wheel brg niether.Thanks again

Sound like an old fashioned push lawn mower.

Sounds off when accellerating...disappers when you easy off the throttle.

Sounds like its coming from the front wheels?

My garage first thought was the turbo bearings.

Simple to diagnose/fix.

I had the same problem with whining from the back end.....found out it was the kids in the back.... .....never took them in the Bongo again..... ....problem solved....

Have you changed the rear tyres recently?

My rear diff is noisy between 50- 55/60. Quiet above or below that speed. Its never got any worse over the last two years.

Okey dokey kicked the kids out,turned radio up,sat our lass in the top box,dog in the trailer and stuff .The noise was there before tyre change,got no worse just a bit concerned.Might just be me and me imagination.A will try some ear plugs or summit.Might just be the way it is.Only between 50-60 mph,not loud.Not to worry thanks for the feedback WEE LED !

Could well be the rear diff - but don't panic

It has a characteristic noise - a kind of distant, blowing in t'wind, whine - and I can't remember if it tends to be louder when you accelerate or when you're on 'overrun' - it's one of the two, but I can't remember which...

Anyways, whether it's the diff or not, you really should drain and replace the oil in both your axles (if you have two). These are regraded by the manufacturers as 'sealed for life' but happily do have drain and refill plugs (or, at least mine did).

You can get really good quality fully-synth HP oils these days which can only be good news for the longevity of yer axles. I bet the oil you drain out will be dark, possibly black; it's been there since new, including the run-in period where the 'rough' edges are smoothed off the gears, leaving a metallic paste floating around your bits.

(I recall some comments regarding the 'grade' of oil to use, something about phosphor-bronze bearings and whether newer oils will attack them; if in doubt, ask the manufacturers.)

If the noise is from your axle, this might not 'cure' it, but I reckon there's a good chance it won't get significantly worse - and your axle will likely last as long as the rest of your Bongo.

And you might find - as I did - that the oil level was waaaay down, and was yucky and black

I think EVERYBODY should replace their axle oil when they first take ownership of their vehicles - it'll likely only need to be done once, is a dead easy job (much easier than other oil changes) and is very cheap to boot. Use the best fully-synth oil you can find - it's only pennies extra.

Good idea to change the diff oil(s) - but make sure you use the correct oil, if your vehicle has a limited slip differential it will use different oil to a 'standard' diff. As I said earlier my rear diff has whined ever since I have owned my Bongo (oil was very low when i got it), over 2 years now, & it has never got any worse, despite doing most of it's journeys towing.
