Bongo Fury

Hi, just had the Bongo serviced, got it home and added 750ml Slick 50 not thinking to check the oil dipstick level!

At cold its up to the kink (1/2 inch) above the full level.

Should I get it drained or will it be okay?

The engine is the 2.5TD 4WD (1996)

If you want to get it down to the full mark, the easiest way is to buy a Pela pump, and suck out the excess oil via the dipstick tube. An argument against overfilling is that it can result in frothing of the oil, which reduces lubrication. I don't know how much it would take for this to happen -- probably a lot more than 750ml extra. A friend of mine servicing his Mazda 323 for the first time accidently drained the transmission fluid instead of the oil, then added the required amount of engine oil with the old oil still in there. It definitely was frothy under the oil cap. And hard to change gear!

I also know someone who did exactly that..

Overfilling can cause some problems and the hi/lo marks on the dipsticks are there for a purpose, however 1 or 2 mm above the hi mark would be okay.....any more than that can cause oil seal problems plus extra pressure in the system and can also contribute some other less common problems in some engines.

Thanks for the info! I will run it for a few 100 miles and check it again. If its still too high I will see if I can get hold of one of those pela pumps.

Errr, I've done that. It was an expensive mistake Not on the Bongo though.

Slick 50, not something I would ever recommend, can be an engine wrecker, I wrote this on post back in January:

Be very careful with Slick 50. We had a Black Cab in here once for a transmission & had the garage on the phone a few days later saying the oil pressure warning light was now on & what had we done? Clearly we don't do anything to effect engine oil pressure & it turned out the owner, after he got it back from us, had added Slick 50 to the engine. When the garage removed the engine sump they found loads of crap stuck all around the oil pump inlet strainer, which was restricting the oil into the pump. Cleaned it all out & it was fine again afterwards. The Slick 50 has some kind of additive in it which softened all the built up rubbish that was coating the inside of the engine & allowed it to circulate in the oil, causing his problem. I personally wouldn't use it, but if you do, only do so if you are sure there are no deposits built up on the inside of the engine.

Someone on the same thread said they did a search on the net & found similar horror stories. You have been warned.

Oh & numpty's draining their transmissions thinking it's the engine is very good for business if you run a transmission shop, long may it continue!!!

Interesting webpage, not that I've ever tried additives (excluding banana peels of course, which are proven to be beneficial ).

On the carbibles site one of the engineers suggested sticking with the same oil, as different companies use different additives that can cancel each other's effects out. I had an oil-related problem with my bongo a few years back: the oil was taking a long time to get from the filler to the bottom of the engine and dipstick, and I ended up over-filling it a few times. I figured that my bongo had a sludge problem, and used STP engine flush, then the engine oil with what I believed has the most additives (Valvoline high mileage diesel). The sludge problem has not returned.
