Front heater/ aircon cleaning.

Hi, I have had this job in my mind to do, since i unseized the front fan and saw all the dirt in the front AC Rad. This is the one inside the front heater pipework. I started by stripping the fan and lubricating it , i wont go into it here as theres a fact sheet on the subject. Next i took some pics of the rad before i cleaned it.Image

As you can see there is a layer of dirt and insects like a carpet in front so out came the toothbrush and the hoover together with some solvent spray and an air blaster, the results were quite a lot better although its difficult to see in the pics.

Finally whilst re-assembling i was trying to think of where i could install a filter and what i could use. My wife came to the rescue as usual and said "you could use tights"
One pop sock later

Hopefully this will keep all the insects and large bits of dirt out and can be replaced easily.
Sorry if this has been detailed before but i thought i`d show you what i was up to.

Yup I did a similar job, with amazing results. No more nasty smells coming out of the system and the airways are so much clearer (with consequent reduced strain on fan motor and reduced likelyhood of the resistor blowing as a result). I actually picked all the bits out carefully using a needle ended bradawl - it seemed to take forever and I had to be very delicate so as not to crush the thin aluminium finning on the heater rad.

I love the idea of using tights as a filter. Unfortunately my wife wouldn't take hers off for me  But it's a great idea. Might buy myself some tights - do you recommend any particular colour?

Just don't use your fishnets Mike  may let a bit too much through
Good idea with the tights, it'll be interesting to see how much it restricts airflow & how quickly they clog up, keep us posted on the condition of your hosiery Clive

I used a old pair of "Y" fronts and although the matrix stayed nice and clean the heater/air con was useless and defo smelled a bit "iffy"

Hi Clive,

Like Mike i cleaned mine out last year after an AC system re-charge...

I did find the foam gasket had degraded pushing air out the sides here...

Image

& here! (Put yer fan on full & place the hand near to find out.)

Image

But i got a roll of this stuff for about £4.50.. A hell of a lot cheaper for the roll than the 5 or 6 quid Halfords charge for a mouse mat size...!
Image

Cut a gasket about 16cm x 23cm? The frame/border 15mm... (Don't quote me.)
Image

With a bit of double side on the corners to stop it slipping, & saving a fiddle, slapped it on the fan side..
Image

This helps when putting the fan assembly back in place...
Image
It kind of hooks in at the bottom & tightens in at the top, pulling it together.

No more air escaping when the fans running. :D

Tights... Work well as a pop shield for recording vocals too!!

Mmmm....! Hard man image??

Or Lincoln green..

Perhaps the urban look.?

jaylee - excellent on all fronts

Haydn - mebbe you shoulda washed the underpants before using them as a filter?

Kirsty - yea, fishnets no good. If I could get through in a flash (I won't say of what) then I reckon any other mildewed bit of dirt could do it just as easily

Hi, some worrying comments here   Been out today and theres loads more through put of air so looks like the pop sock works at least to start with. Her indoors wont be happy if i need to change them weekly
Jaylee, i did make a new gasket from draught excluder seems to stop the escaping air, so maybe this has also helped, just waiting for the summer although if i`m chugging along at 50 ish i prefer the sunroof open and the windows down it seems better.
Thinking about it i guess the rear must be as clogged as the front has anybody cleaned that one?

Rear shouldn't get as bad as there's no exterior inlet, just recircs internal air, plus access to it is virtually impossible unless you want to remove it - http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj58 ... 20removal/ . Don't remeber mine being particularly mucky TBH.

As Kirsty says, it just recirculates what's in the rear compartment... Though i have had it apart for repairs..
