Bongo Fury

I've done a search, and I've tried to find a post regarding a new exhaust that doesn't fall into the category of pimping and ran out of time looking.

My exhaust is blowing, I am going to get a new exhaust (the lot) from a local(ish) place that Bongoing-Mad-Simon got his from (and somehow I trust his judgement) and it's going to be stainless steel.

What do I actually ask for? I don't want burbles or rumbles, or one that shoots flames out every time the Bongo changes gear, I don't want to have to polish it, in fact I don't care what it looks like because as you can't really see the exhaust it doesn't need to be a thing of beauty.

Is there such a thing as a standard exhaust for a Bongo?

Hi Alison, tell them exactly what you have said here and they will make one up for you , they custom make them to your requirements good luck

Thanks Simon, I know yours was custom made and it concerns me that I don't really know one end of the exhaust from another!!

What I require, and what will actually come out of my mouth when I speak to them could result in a very interesting exhaust

Whilst that all sounds fine on paper, I suspect there are issues that are still likely to make it harder for an s/s/ exhaust not to sound more rasping than a mild steel one. Also, I think that all the s/s ones I've seen pics of only feature a single small box. Now I'm not saying that this is here or there (the 'gid rid of your back box cos you don't need one' lobby will be on my back like a pack of wolves), but I imagine it is less costly than the standard Mazda exhaust set up.

I would love to hear from someone prepared to take a decibel meter, and to make some qualitative comments, in respect of comparing the loudness (and quality - pitch, raspiness etc.) of a standard mild steel Bongo exhaust with an s/s one. Because I would be very happy to fit s/s next time round if it really can be made to be quiet and discreet.

In the meantime Alison, I think people just buy them Bongobits, or BF shop, or one of the outfits on ebay (Izura exhasusts are they?). They don't last like s/s should/will though.

Just print off the above Alison, or show them this post If they can fit exhausts then surely they can read? Don't want to polish the exhaust indeed!... tut tut

I fitted a stainless exhaust last year, it has two boxes ,both smaller than the usual mild steel ones and I can't tell that it is any noisier than the old one. It did have a slightly raspier sound just after fitting but then all new exhausts do until a layer of soot buids up inside.

Oooh - well that is encouraging. What was the cost and where was the job done, as I am tempted to go down that road when the time comes

If you fitted a system with smaller silencer boxes but same level of sound output, wouldn't that mean there was a fair chance that to get the noise down, it would need to be more restrictive to gas flow and therefore hinder performance and or economy?

What i know about it is my back box came off about a year ago... ( I was lucky not to rip my bumper!)

I didn't notice any increase in noise level at all... Unlike the MG Metro i had in the late 80's that developed a "bad boy" rasp.. Not like i wanted to get noticed..

Why not get it finished off with one of these

I have a stailess zorst on my diesel Bongo and its no noisier than the standard item

I have an MJI performance zorst...... specified a singe round tailpipe...with normal sound....could have had sporty etc and double tail pipes or "square" tailpipe.... nice an easy....dropped it off walked into Walsall.....had a coffee....walked back...Job was done...
Slightly "tinny" sound on start up but as it warms it sounds normal....

Never to worry about it again....

The exhaust was from Tony Banks in Leeds, cost around £210 but I collected and fitted it myself, this was a year ago so prices will be higher now. I think they post the system out to you for about £15 , not sure how much they charge for fitting .

South Crofty Tyres & Exhausts at Dudnance Lane in Pool (backs on to Tesco Extra's car park).

I've been over there today and the man had a look (bravely rolled under the Bongo with the exhaust all hot and the engine running) and the flexi something is blowing and it's also blowing at the back. I must admit I hadn't even looked, I was going on the noise it's been making and the fact that it doesn't seem to be accelerating in it's normal swift manner (although maybe that's because I'm listening instead of concentrating on my driving). Anyway, they custom make the exhausts (which I knew) and I'm having like for like in stainless steel for "£280 give or take plus VAT". It's booked in for Tuesday.

I will go out and have a look myself later when it's all cooled down
