Rear Suspension bump-stop mounts

Such a minor job, I hesitate to mention it, but only one of my rear suspension bump stops still has it's rubber block shock absorber. I needed to re-glue it as it was coming loose again (the last evostick repair lasted 4yrs so not bad). I decided to unbolt the baseplate, which I imagined would be impossible due to their exposed position and subsequent corrosion. But in fact they undid without any problem using a six-sided socket and extension bar. I found the insides badly corroded (they hold water like a bathtub I guess) so I chipped off all the old rust scale, Kurusted them (I'm sure that stuffs a con - it doesn't seem to penetrate far at all), and brushed them liberally witrh Dinitrol (waxoyl). I also treated the bare bit of chassis hidden underneath them and bolted them back on while waxoyl was wet so it squeegied out and helped seal the joint between bumstop baseplate and chassis.

camera batteries are flat or I'd have taken a pic or two. It's a small job, but its nice to know this little hidden area has now been treated against tinworm.

Anyone got a spare rubber bumpstop hanging around? I've been after one for ages :(

as an aside. our bongo was in for a service this week & the bumpstop rubbers came home in a box in the back! our tame grease-monkey said if he hadn't pulled them off that they would have been bouncong down the road on their own soon. so , today i pulled off the backing plates , ground all the rust off (plenty , hence the de-bonding) cleaned & keyed the rubber , glued with araldite (i didnt paint the glued face as i didnt want to compromise the bond) then fitted 2 x m6 self drilling hex head screws through the backplate (in the "dimple") into the rubber block to support the joint should the glue fail. a good coat of hammerite tomorrow & they'll be good as new. hopefully!

Hi could one of you chaps post a photo , whilst i was waxoiling last weekend it occured to me there was no bump stops on the rear suspension. I also found a little plate bolted to the chassis and thought whats that for. Sounds like mine have escaped  i will have a look at lushprojects see if i can see where they go.

Hi Lazyb5, yes, there is a rather substantial, solid block of domed rubber that, strangely bonds to the bumpstop mounting plate.

My bongo has been lowered, so the rear axle makes regular contact with the bumpstops, and i've actually lost count of just how many i've had replaced now... 5? ... 6?

First time round the usual happened, the rubbers came away from the mounts, but the mounts were still insitu. I chopped away maybe 3/4's of an inch out of the middle of each rubber, so i was left with two half rubbers per stop... I rebonded them using Sikaflex, then bonded the now shorter bumpstops to a ground clean bumpstop mount. It helped quite a bit with the bottoming out issue, but invariably the stops failed after a year or so of the battering they take :?

I think one of mine is missing again from the last time they were replaced #-o

I'm scrapping the bumpstops completely. I'm on the lookout for the hollow rear body buffers from a small truck (the rubbers that bounce the truck off loading bays) I suspect they will be more compliant than the bongo's solid rubber jobs, yet will still stop metal to metal contact :D

You're more than welcome to my existing B/S should the above modification pan out mike.

That's a great offer Ste and thanks - I've been meaning to sort this one for the last 4 years.

There's been an interesting development on this one. I was over at Adrian's on Friday having new shockers put and he said these bump stops can be got through Mazda dealers, and are not expensive. Part number S10H 28 111. I've just made an enquiry to one of the ebay Bongo part vendors to see if they might be able to source and offer them online, as you have to collect parts from Mazda (says Adrian), and my nearest would probably cost me more in fuel (and time) than the postal option.

I'll keep this thread updated.

P.S. nicstrike - I was wary of using araldite as although it is great stuff, I wondered if it might fracture/debond if the rubber gets a big whack and flexes. I used Evostick and (to my surprise, being honest) the repair has lasted 4 years. On repairing it, I've put a bead of Evostick as a kind of weld line to try seal out water ingress along the glue line, plus it should give and extra hold between ruber and metal. And now, it seems, you can buy new ones cheap ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Been having a look at the bump stop going to take the backing plate off this morning and have a look to see if i can come up with something. The dog chew is a possibility as long as i can get a bolt through the backing plate. Dog wont be happy though

One of mine dropped off when I touched it last year, I've been meaning to pop it back on for ages now.

Maybe this thread will prompt me into doing it!

i was a bit wary , hence i doubled up with mechanical fixings too.it was either araldite or gripfill (my usual first choice it has to be said!)
just a thought for a lowered bongo , howsabout polyurathene bumpstops? normally a mod for landrovers etc but could be adapted to suit.

Why doesn't your dog like bolts being put through backing plates? I once had a cat that disliked candyfloss being burnt in bathtubs, but otherwsie he wasn't that fussed as long as i didn't kick him too much. :D

Oh... and i once had a hamster named Mathew, he hated the sound that sausage rolls make if dropped from a great height.

A nice thought, i'd considered it... but ruled out polyurathane as being less compliant (if solid) Now a hollow, yet strong, poly bump stop with no backing plate might do the job.

How much were the bumpstops via Mazda Mike? (onb4c)
