Turning engine over/ Cutting out.

Hi out there in Bongoland, Hope someone can help diagnose my problem and suggest how to resolve it please?
We have a 2.5ltr 1996 2wd automatic.
I have been away in the bongo over the bank holiday (our first outing in anger, since we bought it) for 2 nights in north wales.
The problem occurred when we stopped for a toilet break after about 50 miles, when i went to turn the engine over it was like the battery was flat ( the battery is only 3 months old),I put on some revs and managed to get it going. Then when we came to the first junction the engine seemed to loose revs and stalled. I managed to get it started again and then no problems on the motorway for the rest of the journey untill we came to junctions again and we kept stalling out. I drove the rest of the way using the S2 gear and then changing up to Drive. All seemed well when we set off home this morning, then when i got home after 80 miles driving I went to start it up again and go down the shops the same problem occurred. I have now parked it up at home.
Thanks, Alexandersupertramp.
