Bongo Fury

Hi all. I've got a 2000kg rated trolley jack which lifts to 328 mm. My axle stands are also rated at 2000 kg. These were fine for working on our car but are they unsafe to use with the Bongo?

as you will probably ever be lifting only a quarter of the Bongo and never more than half they will be fine.

I've witnessed a 2 ton (OK not exacly the same and it was a Halfords one but...) go pop when trying to lift the rear end of a Bongo. My 2 ton one lifted my Bongo once but felt overstrained on another occasion so I stopped and don't do it any more. If I was buying one now, I'd buy a 3 ton jack for peace of mind. And I would always put axle stands in place before venturing underneath (can't remember if mine are 2 ton or 3 ton ).

I reckon that must have been faulty Mike My 2 tonne jack from Aldi/Lidl works fine and, in theory, should be able to lift the entire Bongo - wouldn't want to try that though

i got one from screwfix suppose to be 2t

it gets no were near shifting one corner of the bongo

so it really depends

Indeed - and why risk it for the sake of a few quid. The Bongo is obviously a lot bigger than the average car and peace of mind is what's required here.

Before i bought one,i borrowed my son-in-law's Halfords one~2 ton,but it was absolutely useless~i couldn't seem to get the leaverage required~so i bought a 3 ton one with axle stands to match, from Machine Mart last year (a bit heavier duty) & it lift's front or back end easily.

In theory a 2ton one should lift complete front or back end but i'd rather not struggle

I use a old 2 ton one with no problems to date....I would never go under without stands as I once had a 5 ton jack pop it's seals when under a mondeo, just got out as it slowly came down....so ! that tells me that any jack can fail and 2 ton performs well on a Bongo as long as it's a half decent one.....as with most things...you get what you pay for.

I also use a 2 tonne trolley jack on the bongo without problems, even when jacking all of front or rear it is still only lifting about half of its capacity, I used to have a coachbuilt motorhome which was a lot heavier than a bongo and it was fine on that too. However as has been mentioned any jack can fail without warning so never get under with only the jack and I'm always wary even when reaching under to position axle stands in case the jack suddenly 'lets go'.

Can we be sure that the jack and axle stand manufacturers really mean that it will actually support the whole of that weight directly or are they referring to the overall weight of the vehicle?

They surely must mean that a 2 ton jack can lift 2 tons, not just a corner of a 2-ton car.

It means a jack is rated at 2 tons lift...TOTAL...
Personally, I would go with good quality equipment, rather than cheap stuff...especially the axle stands....plus...make sure someone is with you all the time to hoik you out at the merest whiff of a problem...The only SAFE way to get under a vehicle is a proper pillar lift, or an inspection pit.

i had an inspection pit once ,tried to sell it ,couldnt get any one to come and take it away .....

Why would anyone want to use a trolley jack on one corner of a car anyway? Call me Irish (which I am), but I'd as happily use the standard scissor jack to do that

The convenience, time saving and necessity of jacking up a whole axle in one operation is (for me) the reason to reach for the (3 ton) trolley jack.

I take it you haven't used your scissor jack on the Bongo - trolley jack is a heck of a lot easier
