Flashing glow plug sequence

I have a September 2000 Bongo (diesel, 4WD, etc) with an intermitent problem with a flashing glow plug light and have tried virtually everything. According to the Engine Diagnostics factsheet, the fault code is indicated in the flashing sequence of the light, and gives examples of this in the sheet which seems quite straigntforward until I realised it refers to sequences of long and short flashes. Since my sequence is approximatly one second on - and one off - and it continues in this way I'm not sure if these are short or long, but taking a stab at it I come up with the sequence 1111 (or P1111 as required on the Equus website which is recommended on the sheet) which gives no diagnostic reason for this sequence.

Does anyone have any further info on this sequence? There are no wiring diagrams available in the UK for my model Bongo (not even from Bongo Fury!!!) - if there were I might be able to track the fault down. The symptoms begin with a drop in power. This is caused by the turbo not cutting in as required (although the turbo is not the problem - I have had it checked out) and putting the vehicle into 'limp home' mode. Seconds later the light starts flashing - presumably because the ECU has picked up the fact that there is a problem.

This isn't a breakdown situation. I can drive for literally hundreds of miles like this - if somewhat slower than required, particularly on hills.

Any help on that flashing sequence gratefully received.

Reread the diagnostic factsheet, you need to short a couple of connections on the diagnostic port to get the flashing sequence, if you don't do that, they all flash one on, one off
Sounds like you could have the usual fly by wire fuel pump issues common to the later model diesels. I think someone had come up with a company that could refurb the fuel pump for these, I'm sure someone will be along with more info.

2000 4WD Diesel auto.
I had a similar problem last week. The engine had been slow to start in the cold (-10c) and I had turned the glow plugs on 3 times (to make sure they were really hot ) prior to starting the engine itself.
Half way home the glow plug light starting flashing but nothing else changed. Got home and turned the warm engine on and off a few times but the flashing glowplug light remained.
Got on the forum and read lots about glow plug light diagnostic sequences. But also read:
1) it could be due to low battery voltage.
2) disconnecting battery can reset glow plug flashing.

So today went out and checked battery - showed only 11.3V ie not fully charged. Didnt bother to start engine but went and swapped the battery for the spare one I keep in the garage (as you do !) which was still showing 12.5v despite sitting in the garage for several months - so I knew it was good. Connected it up and the car started 1st time (Ok its warmer now too, +6C). battery showed 13.8v whlist engine running - so its charging OK ( as was the Leisure battery too).

But more relevant to you - the glowplug light is now NOT flashing.

So I suggest you check you battery voltage before even bothering with diagnostic code sequences etc , and also see what happens if you disconnect the battery for 30 secs .

yours is the middle of 3 turbo designs and unfortunately the least stable! the actual problem originitaes from inside the turbo itself, where a multi-layer gasket begins to seperate and makes the waste gate operation stiffen. To properly fix it involves stripping the turbo apart etc but you casn just replace, the rear most vacuum valve under the drivers seat. they cost a lot for what they are and you can source second hand from breakers or Bell Hill Garage for a few pounds. lift the driver seat and fixed to the rail behind the power steering pump resevoir, you have a block of 4 black plastice valves, its the rear most vertical (whit dot) you need to replace

I'm curious, are you putting in the jumpe wire in the diagnostic plug? as i've never known any vehicle to produce just straight on/off flashing and for the record with the later type bongo's the whole diagnostic bit doesnt change flash duration, its just a simple count up system. the problem usually occurs when you first switch on with the jumper fitted, the error count can be anywhere in its sequence, the beginning is signified by a long pause, then there is a long (in relation,we'll call --) pulse, then a series of short pulses (we'll use -),followed by a space, then another long pulse and then a series of short, the code your most likely getting is 1,2,2,8 and or 0,4,0,0 (Note these systems use no pulse to signify a 0) so a 1,2,2,8 (wastgate failure to open under pressure) would be (long space) (--) -(1), (--) - -(2), (--) - -(2), (--) - - - - - - - -(8), then you have a slightly longer space, if you have more fault codes or the long space if there is only 1 code stored

Did you sort this problem?. I have the same model with the same symptons, just getting round to getting it fixed ordered a new vaccuum valve will try that first then will try and remove the turbo to sort the waste gate gasket.
