Aircon idler pulley bearing

Screams like a banshee for first 15 seconds of start up. Then goes quiet. Pretty sure its the aircon pully bearing. Does anyone know the part number or dimensions of the bearing so I can get a new one first rather than strip it and then go get one?

take the belt off and see if it goes away....if not then it's alternator belts suspect....

try getting in there with WD40, sometimes the bearings/clutch just dry out and need lubing up, or as hayden suggests could be a belt playing up til the units spun up?

That's a bit radical isn't it? Could he not first just:

* Check belts are properly tensioned (they may squeal if they are too loose)

* Try spraying/putting something on it first to see if the squealing on start up disappears (can't remember what folks have used. WD40? Talcum powder?. Have a search on here cos its been discussed before. It's not a fix, just a means of testing its the belt and not a bearing.

Must admit though, 15 secs then no more sounds a bit like what a bearing might do. But you can't be sure until you test

When I say scream I mean "not like a slipping fan belt" very definitely a more mechanical noise. I changed belts (alternator and aircon) 1500k ago and I "might" have over tensioned them which is why I strongly suspect the idler bearing.

Hi
King Noggin....It wasn't Gracula screeching, by any chance....
Sorry, I can't help with the dimensions, but if you can get the old one out, a lot of bearings are standard, and available from a good supplier off the shelf, so it shouldn't be off the road for days
Cheers

I'm not bright about these things and haven't looked at my Bongo close up, but can the belts be made to work without having to go round the aircon pulley, or does the aircon have its own belt? (I'm not going out to look in this weather    )

Hi
You can run without it, but on my Opel, you had to strip a lot of other gear off...not worth the effort...I haven't looked at the Bongo ( Thank goodness I don't have that german junk any more    ...)
Cheers

the pulley you want is what tensions the belt

so you just remoe it and the belt
