fuel cap fix?

Post by skater » Fri Nov 19, 2010 1:40 pm

Hi,

Quick question. Is the fuel cap "serviceable"?

Mine does the "air sucking" thing when opened after a longer journey,
especially if brimmed before journey.

Have searched but didn't find my answer.

Thanks, James.

That's how it should be. There is a vacuum relief valve in case the
pressure (vacuum) gets too low in the tank which will stop the tank
collapsing. It's designed to stop fuel fumes escaping from the tank.

So there shouldn't be an " intake breath " when cap opened?

Should the vacuum relief valve keep pressure equalised as the fuel is used?

That's what I thought.
So my cap doesn't seem to be relieving the pressure drop.

Has anyone fixed theirs or do I just buy a new one?

Thanks.

I think they may be designed to keep a slight vacuum, because mine always did make a slight hiss when removed.
However, mine did bung up (probably with veg oil), so I just put it in hot, soapy water for a few minutes, until I could easily suck air through it - no problems since 8)

Oh go on   I did rinse the soap off first, so I was just sucking clean plastic and you know that air will go through it again 8)

I stripped my cap at the beginning of July, and never bothered putting back together since. I don't run with a full tank, as it might leak through the cap? I've not noticed any difference in the running of the Bongo.

Thanks mister munkey, have washed mine as recommended

Haven't done long journey yet but think the intake breath seems a bit less when checked so far.
