V6 Auto box tapping

Hi all,

Not sure I am worried about this, but the Auto box has been making a high pitched metallic tapping sound now pretty much since I bought it. It doesnt do it unless the van starts to move forwards on light throttle then the tapping picks up speed with the vehicle and thereafter you cannot really hear it. Every other function of the box is absolutely fine but I do wonder what it might be ???

Anybody able to diagnose ???

thanks

Tony

Are you sure it coming from the gearbox, is it louder when you got the passenger window open by any chance :?: especially when your driving up a road with a high verge or wall, on that side only at low speed tootering along :) sounds suspiciously like a sound i have had on mine for over 3 year now i think  i drove home with the passenger engine cover up one day  I WOULD NOT RECOMEND THAT THO :!: :!:

if so i have a theory

The reason i ask is i thought it was my gearbox at first.

I'm afraid I will say what I say to my customers when they phone with a noise problem, it's not possible to diagnose it without hearing it 'in the flesh'. Give any vehicle with a noise complaint to 5 different people & you will get 5 different descriptions of the noise (one person on here once likened a noise to a whale giving birth or something equally unhelpfull!! ).

As cheffy says, make sure it is the gearbox making the noise. I had a guy in here yesterday with a T4 making a rattling noise from his auto 'box - it turned out to be a strip of hardened silicone that had come out of the windscreen rubber & was rattling on the roof!!

Roger that !!

Funnily it is exactly as described above, wind down passenger window etc !!!
More investigation required...

If it what i'm thinking check your purge valve(evap valve) on your carbon canistor. It quite common on cars i believe difference is your passenger is sitting right above it instead of it being upfront under a bonnet away from ears reach. I believe but i may be wrong but it does affect emmissions slightly but not enough to fail it, it all to do with the egr  Where's Dandy when you need him he will know the full answer :!:

Yip ssecond that 3 mechanics looked at my engine noise 1 said piston ring, 2 said heads are goosed, 3 said the bottom end was toast and at the minute havin mine in bits myself at mo it aint any of them, but i reckon i have found the real reason but we will find out when i get it back together, not only a f####d cambelt it would appear.

I am pretty happy it's nothing serious so watch this space when it all goes up the creek next week !!! Will check EGR etc and try there (when it stops raining !)
