under the steering wheel is a screwed on panel,remove this and see if any wires are rubbing around the steering column.the fuse box and the brake pedal switch,and the radio live feed could all be found in this area.

Check your Break Fluid level under the bonnet ! There is a sensor that detects low level and illuminates the light and hence kills the radio

hi geoff, can you explain that a little more please.
i understand the sensor,i misunderstood which brake light he meant,thought he meant external,not the warning light on the dash.but how does that affect the radio please.

There is a signal from the breaking system to the radio, its not only in the Bongo but several other cars, I assume its to switch the volume down when breaking in order to hear external signs, its NOT part of the standard ISO10487 connector;
In the diagram below in the top left corner the Mazda radio connector 3I links back to the Breaking system via the (77) link click it and .....

and you will see this page (or one similar there are two variations depending on model), the (77) then links into the Breaking system;

No radio till brakes fixed!!!!

Is there any way to test for this feature, like having the radio on while key is in that plug warm pre-start position & all the warnings come on?? Just thought.. The handbrake would have to be off too..

Thanks for the reply but the bongo has gone into melt down now ie; side door not locking on closing, hand brake light permently on now, cig lighter not working, and alarm for the ignition keys stopped working aswell. Could this be coinsidence or was it me fitting the new stereo. Whatever the reason budget bongos can have it back to sort out, we have only had it 2 days :( :x :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

That sounds rather like a fuse infact this one;

As that covers all the miscellaneous stuff off of the ignition switch. Fitting a new stereo, would match with the symptoms as well - a short whilst installing blowing the fuse.
The side door not locking can also be caused by the mechanism getting out of sync, often occurs when people disconnect the battery and then use the door ?

As to why the Braking signal is fed to the radio beats me, I can see reference to it on the web in a couple of places, more normally associated with DVD and video displays, in that case it turns ON the display when the Handbrake is on. But in this case its seems to mute / turn off the radio.....
