Our 96 bongo has started giving out white smoke from the exhaust when you start the engine and when in traffic, pulling off from lights. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Supposed to be going on two week trip sat and feeling v worried

First question is it white "smoke" or steam?
White smoke smells "oily" but steam smells like ...errr a damp steamy bathroom.

Petrol or diesel engine?
Have you checked the coolant level?

I don't think it's steam as there is a smell. Just watched my husband drive off and the smoke continued as he accelerated down the road. Booked into a garage tomorrow.
And yes I do have a 1996 2.5 diesel in white.

Could it be the paint falling of the bongo.

Just kidding.
Looks like the classic escape of the water into the cylinder.
It will smell because you are still burning diesel.
Hope it is just something cheap and easy.

Had bongo checked out by nonspecialist who can't see a prob. Just realized that bongo is using even more fuel than usual. Anyone got a new diagnosis?
On way to cornwall so calling into topshom car sales see if the can help. Fingers crossed x

Hi,
does your vehicle have a Winter Pack (cold start exhaust system) If so get your garage to check it just in case it is partially closed.
PS when your mechanic said ( can't see a prob)did he not see the smoke/steam coming from the exhaust,or had it cleared by then?
