Bongo Fury

Hi,

Anyone changed these? Any tips?

I've had mixed experiences changing suspension bushes so wondered how bad these are to do.

easy to do given the correct toolage, vice and big hammer. take it your meaning the lower wishbone bush which is normal to go. can be a pain to remove as they are just brayed in to the wishbone, i was expecting some retaining clip to hold in position as they are only an interference fit and any play in the old wishbone would result in the bush just dropping out (as i found out days before an mot) can take up to a couple of hours to change depending on how solid in postion they are. can be done on vehicle but i found it easier to remove the few bolts holding the whole thing in place. make sure you get the new one seated square before drifting back in place. (usual stuff for bushes) if its either of the other bushes they would be easier to replace but i havnt seen these for sale separately.

I had a bad experience with a Peugeot once when I had to 'fashion' a pulling device to remove one.

They looked pretty straightforward when it was up in the air and I was checking the freeplay....certainly too much play to have got through the last MOT with them!
I was expecting to have to do some of the bushes, droplinks etc. part of the course with an older vehicle.
I'm more comfortable with 'nuts and bolts' jobs.

BTW the Rad went fine and seems to have cured all the Bongo's ills

By bottom, do you mean the ones at the back of the wishbones?

if doing the outer ball joint,as dreamy says above but also check that the wishbone is not rusted badly before you start or it may fall apart.

The ones at the ball joints aren't that bad, it's the ones to the rear of the wishbones that really need doing.

I've only seen the others advertised. Any ideas where to get some?

Mail them...they are pretty good...or bongo bits may do the bushes...not the balljoint!

i stand corrected on availability of the bushes.

never changed these but should be straightforward, the one that usually goes is connected to the wheel hub.

glad the rads sorted things out, have you ripped the old one to bits yet for a laugh

I did intend massacring the old rad, but I also had my son's 6th birthday party, BBQ etc. to fit in on top of changing rad, bleeding, test drives, adjusting up the handbrake shoes, shopping and having a few beers....couldn't fit it in

I did take a picture of the heaped tablespoonful of crud that came out of the small header hose though....has to be seen to be believed. I put the hose in a plastic bag and gave it a good squeeze

are you sure that the heaped tablespoon of crud wasnt radseal or something like that.

Seems an obvious question but how do you check if the wishbone bushes are worn? By levering with a screwdriver there is little movement 'side to side' just the compression of the rubber, but 'back to front' the whole wishbone moves a few millimeters. Is this normal?
