Bongo Fury

Hi All,

I have now had my wheels balanced and am still getting a massive wheel and body shake over 60. I can drive through it but it's not feeling safe at all.

I have had all wheels balanced by 2 garages.
Checked the power steering fluid.

1. Should I add sprigits first (if anyone knows where I might get them)

2. or replace all wheels! but I would like to do the cheaper first.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

PS. It did have alloys fitted when bought it!

You could try swapping the wheels from the front to the rear.

You would only need spigot rings if your wheels are the wrong centre bore.

Ps is it a 2wd or 4wd.

It's a 4 wheel drive. I will try that though, swapping the wheels.

Hi,I Am presuming that your rear wheels are balanced.

I had this problem with my Bongo and discovered that the wheel bolts had been fitted the wrong way round on two of the wheels This meant as I drove along they kept working themselves loose (the bolts and wheels were both slightly damaged too). The solution for me was to put a nice new set of alloys on. No problems at all now.

Where is the best place to buy wheels? Bongo Shop?

I'm not saying these will fit or be the solution,but a set of wheels are going to cost plenty~this is a cheap try (if you like)

I'm currently experiensing the same after having my wheels balanced - now after having removed the wheels and looking at the alloys its quite obvious that the bore on the alloys is larger than the bongo ones so i am currently ordering spigots and hopefully that will resolve the issue.

Let's work from a few assumptions based on experience here... I have seen examples in the past where a set of alloys had been rotated on a vehicle, where plastic spigot rings* (sometimes they are aluminium) have been used on the wheels... In some cases the rings stick to the chamfer in the centre bore of the wheel (where they should sit), in other cases i've seen them wedged onto the chamfer of the hub centre! Now, if the wheels have been rotated with some of the SR's on the wheels, and one or more stuck onto the hubs , then it's viable that one or more of the wheels have two SR's on one wheel, and maybe two SR's on another! I really would remove the wheels, and check carefully for SR's (if fitted) or any type of debris on the hub faces stopping a flat seating of the wheels. Check also for any anomalies around the tyre (bubbles/lumps etc).

* A lot of "aftermarket" alloy wheels are "Multi-fit". That means they are multi drilled to fit many different manufacturers vehicles, with a bigger centre bore. Sometimes the gap in the hub needs to be filled with a spigot ring, this fills the gap, helps the wheel to seat centrally, and generally doesn't make the wheel rely on just the wheel-studs to hold it steady. As the wheel spins faster, centrifugal force increases, this puts strain on the studs, a spigot ring helps to take the brunt of that strain.

That's a good point. I will whip the wheels off this evening after work. I have ordered those sprigot rings from ebay Let's try these before proceeding.

I'll report back as this could be helpful to others.

you need to whip off the wheel and measure the ID (internal diameter) of your alloy before you order the SR as there are different sizes of rings for different alloys - these then drop the ID down to bongo size = 67.1 so i hope you ordered the right ones as there are different sizes.

Hoorah .. Spigot rings are the answer !!!

Just got back from a test run after fitting 4 spigot rings on my 15' alloys - you could tell they needed them as you could see the gap between the alloy and the champfer - the spigot rings were a snug fit.

Took her out on the motorway .. 60 .. no wobble .. 70 no wobble ... 80 no wobble .... i would say the improvement is 95% there is the tinyest of vibrations but the wheels may need balancing/tracking again as ive taken them off loads recently.

That's great news. I am just waiting for mine to arrive in the post. I will spend this weekend sorting this darn shake out.

Cheap Alloys are the devils playground.

Mine does the same thing between 65 and 75mph so I think I'll have a bash at the spigots as well...

Ok, I bought these and they arrived Friday just gone.

I took the wheels off and there was play, only a couple of mm but enough to make the wheels off centre (so I could have got these balanced until the cows came home, but still need doing). Fitted the Spigots. Which was a doddle, apart from these crappy alloys I inherited had small nuts, so had to get the socket set out.

These where the perfect fit for my Bongo and the Alloys, so there must be a standard size bore on alloys, I don't know, but I should image there is.

The result is much improved and no shake from 60 to 80, if it returns, so shall I, to report back to the good people of Bongoland..
