After meeting Alison at merley and explaining about how hard i am finding a garage to sort out our diff i made a call to Al's vehicle services down plymouth and he was most helpful. He will take off our old diff and rebuild it and put a recon one in its place. What a brill idea! Cant help wondering why nobody else put this to me at any of the garages i rang? Just waiting for allan to get back with the price so i can book it in. i think i wont mind the long drive down to get it fixed as its gonna be a lot cheaper and safer than getting one from a breakers.

This could turn out to be an upgrade or vice versa if your old diff was a standard diff and the new one was a limited slip diff.

I will let you know Rita when he has got back to me. I spoke to him yesterday and he sounds quite an ok guy and I had Alison's recomendations as well so I feel he will do a good job.

My rear diff is noisy & will need some attention sometime so I would be interested as well. I have a couple of people in our area that I use for manual gearboxes if I need them & they also do diff's so it will be good to compare prices.

How can you find out if you have a standard diff or a limited slip diff ?

LSD diffs should have a sticker on saying it's Limited Slip. But to be certain, jack up the rear so both rear wheels are off the ground. (Handbrake off and put blocks under front wheels so vehicle doesn't move... done at your own risk of course ). Rotate one rear wheel by hand. If the other wheel turns in the same direction, it's got a LSD. (If it turns in the opposite direction, it's not a LSD).

Also make sure it is not in park (or in gear if its manual). If it is in park & it has a LSD you won't be able to turn either way more than just taking out the backlash. Although you will know if it has an LSD by then! On mine you can tell when driving it. If you pull away reasonably fast on a tight lock it will judder from the rear end & the inside tyre will skid if on a loose surface.

Im not sure how this might work out but just to let you know I live in Hove and I go to Looe in Cornwall quite a lot (lived there for about 10 years and still got my flat there) and I obviously go through Plymouth to get there so if you are having probs getting your vehicle to allens ! Anyway you get what I am saying !

By the way. Thanks 2 all for all the info on the LS Diff. Havn't tried it yet but if you don.t hear from me soon you will know that I jacked it up at the rear and got it wrong!
