My bongo is using quite alot of oil recently. It has a new cylinder head (last six months) and does not appear to be leaking any oil. Am I worrying needlessly or this a symptom of a bigger, more worrying problem?
many thanks
Deb :?

deb if there is no sign of leak check you are using the right grade of oil because if you oil is to thin then it will burn away

Hi Deb

I'd try putting a bit of newspaper under it after a run, this will show if you have a leak.

If it isn't leaking it must be burning it.

Mine gets through about a litre every 1000 miles or so & after 2 years of head scratching turns out to be worn rings on cylinders 2 & 3.

A dose of Wynns Stop Smoke added to the oil after a change reduces that by about 50%

Apart from smoking a bit when giving it a heavy right foot up hills it doesn't show any other signs of sickness & will be sorted at some point.

One short term benefit is that - technically - its getting fresh oil in on a regular basis, rather like a constant flush oil system.

If it's on the drivers side towards the front....I bet it's not from the head at all....EGR gunk.....

As Haydn said, it's probably EGR gunk from around the air intake, nowt to do with the oil, you could blank off the EGR if it's not working properly, there's a fact sheet in the members area explaining the pros & cons, but there's a good chance your air inlet could look like this inside - Image
