Bongo Fury

Spent all day cleaning the bongo up for new season, I've also waxoyld underneath and wheel arches. He fired up fine this morning but after 5 hours of cleaning he wont start. The engine struggles to turn over and doesnt fire then stops turning over, is it simply a flat battery OR have I accidently got waxoyl, or jet washed - something that I shouldnt have ?

I've put the battery on Charge, the charging lamp came on straight away so I guess it could be flat, the battery is original Jap one.

Anyone recommended a good troubleshooting path to take now ?

Sounds as though you have flattened the battery,,,were you listening to the radio ??

you may have some damp somewhere.... but step 1 is as your doing....charge the battery and try again in the morning....
If the battery has a JIS number and this is an example......not Bongo.... 46B24L or similar then like mine will have a Jap battery.....

To change to a new one it's your call..... I got a Yuasa Professional (Jap battery) from a Local Motor Factor at £41 .....
Now this was Yuasa number 030 or the equivalent DIN number 068.... some feel they need extra oomph and fit DIN 249 batteries.......IMHO they are a waste of money as the 030 I got has the usual 3 yr warranty and starts the Bongo on the button, no long cranking and then fire up...... yer pays yer money

It wasn't the interior light you had on was it? Sounds like a flat battery is the most likely cause. Most of the fuel injection system is mechanical, so a drop of water or waxoyl shouldn't hurt.

Just to clarify, is yours diesel or petrol mayk19 (I ought to know but can't remember )?

Diesel engine, been on charge overnight, will give it a go. Interior lights could have been on I guess. Are all the interior lights off the engine battery and not the leisure battery ?

Depends on how the L/B was wired !

Unless you have rewired the car in some way following LB installation then everything should be coming off the SB. The way to find out I guess would be to disconnect LB and see if any lights no longer work (this assumes there is a working device - which there should be - that isolates the LB from the SB when engine is off). No doubt I'll be corrected if I've got this wrong.

I'll be interested to hear what result you get once SB has been charged.

If the outcome is that do decide to get a new SB, I notice that (the other!) Mike is of the view that fitting a higher AmpHr battery is a waste of money. I'm one of those who thinks a more powerful SB is worth the extra. Two principal reasons:

* You can always use extra reserve capacity when you are dealing with an automatic (can't be bump started) 2 ton van that may be taken to a field far from help. If you were to leave that interior light on, it might just make a critical difference.

* This is just a theory, but I wonder if reduced SB performance may contribute to poor starting through a failure to maintain voltage to the glowplugs when the starter motor is turned (this was certainly the case with my model airplanes). No doubt I'll now receive a lecture on how CCA (cold cranking amps) is what matters, not AmpHrs. Personally, I'm suspicious (with good reason I think) of statements, specs and guarantees given by todays manufacturers esp. in areas like battery performance (always a black art anyway). But - crudely - bigger is better in my view.

You do indeed 'pays yer money' but I'm very happy with my decision. My 95Ah SB is now three and a half years old and the Bongo (as always) starts perfectly on the touch of the key. It'll be interesting to see how long the battery actually lasts.

After a long hard winter a lot of elderly batteries tend to give up the will to live.

I now have an excellent 95ah Bosch S4 starter battery which has cured all sorts of other niggles at the same time. Primary benefit being vastly improved headlight performance compared to the tired 70ah it replaced.

not much improvement this morning, still wont fire after about 12 hours charge. Only jump leeds I have are the type that go in the cig socket, wouldnt fire off that.

The battery is a 105D31L-MF

But another chart I have says.....105D31L - Volt 12 - (AH) 90

The number is a Japanese number and you can see the power if it above.... so if your replacing.... 068 or 249 ... don't g to halfrauds go to a local motor factor with t trade counter.... it will still be 1/2 price compared to halfrauds

Are you able to check the voltage to the Glowplugs ? Either a meter or put a bulb between the bar and chassis and see if it lights - that proves the fuse and relay are OK.
