Local Garage Reports a Failed N/S Front Drive Shaft

Hi all,

My wife drives a 4WD Bongo and reported a knocking sound when cornering. This has got worse and worse over a short period of time and the vehicle has now been recovered to a local garage who are not Bongo specialists.
They have taken a look and reported that it needs a new n/s front drive shaft, on back order with mazda and will cost £384 for the part excluding fitting.
Does this sound right?

Thanks in advance

Andy

CV joints only £65 from Bongo Fury shop, so it seems very high - unfortunately currently out of stock #-o, but you could try Bongobits etc.
Put your location in your profile - see http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=29471 - we may then be able to point you to a local supplier 8)

Is it likely to just be a CV joint thats failed?

AVA Leisure have come up trumps, Andy will speak to the garage tomorrow.

They can supply a CV joint for £38 or a used drive shaft for £100, will also help them to diagnose the parts required.

TOP MAN thank you very much.

CV joint is 90% of the time likely to be the source.

Go cheapest option first.

I had a similar knocking/clicking when cornering. It was indeed the outer CV joint, it had lost its grease due to boot clip u/s. New boot clip (HD ty -wrap) and repacked with grease as a temp solution. That was 2 years ago

agree with all, outer cv is on its way and the garage are trying it on, buy a cv from fleabay about £30 and ask them to fit it, 1 hours labour tops

Hi, I've also hat the same knocking sound lately from the front right wheel and took it to a garage who said it was the CV Joint. They have asked me for £180 + VAT to get one and fit it. Does this sound reasonable or should I tell them no thank you?

I'm in Newcastle/Gateshead. Not sure there are any specialists around here. Do you think that's a reasonable price. He reckons a couple of hours work

When you factor in fuel, aggravation etc. that price - although it doesn't sound stunning - is probably one you just have to accept unless you are a budding DIY mechanic and/or someone on here can come up with a suggestion for their favourite local good and cheap mechanic. Might be worth renaming your thread so readers can see at once you are looking for a good, cheap mechanic in the Newcastle (u Tyne?) area. Good luck. 8)

The Bongo Friendly garage list in the club members section shows a recommended Bongo Garage in Cramlington. You could give them a try if you are a club member.

Cheers Tony, I'll see if I can find them and give them a ring. I spoke to the garage this morning and they said they were going to charge me £100 for the part! It's only £41 including postage on mazdabongoshop.co.uk.
