Bongo Fury

I've been getting through oil at the rate of about 1 litre per 1000 miles since I bought the Bongo 3 years ago. Problem has now been identified (after recent head gasket change) as bieng worn rings on Numbers 2 & 3.

Question being, is it a good idea to stick something along the lines of Slick 50 or the like in to assist as I'm not too keen to keep having it in the surgery every other week.

Does this kind of stuff really do what it says on the tin or is it a compromise?

Whether additives would help will depend on how bad the problem is. If it was mine and there's a chance the rings could be sticking, I'd try a really good quality engine flush to deglaze the bores etc, then an additive.

slick 50 is good as it thickens the oil somewhat
my mazda 6 i had used to drink a bit of oil when i put slick 50 in seemed not to use as much

Cheers dude, another week won't hurt, just want to make sure it does more good than harm before I sling it in.

I'd go with Lorna's advice, use the 2 part, flush first, then put in the additive, worth a shot, certainly shouldn't cause any harm, surprised you didn't get it sorted while the head was off?

Cheers guys, has had engine oil flush at last major service 1000 miles ago, I guess that part is taken care of.

I'd just like to cut down on the oil burning & smokey bursts under load until such time as I can get it off the road to have rings done.

There are additives which are supposed to reduce oil being forced past worn rings and burning, might be more suitable than slick 50 which is mainly a friction reducer I believe.

Yes, that is the type of thing I had in mind, has the consistancy of treacle so thickens the oil . Slick 50 probably not be of help then.

Hi Mister M, a friend of mine used 'Lucas heavy duty oil stabaliser' in his old engine, he said there was quite a difference in improvement , haven't tried it myself though. Haven't got a link to this product, but he got it off Ebay, bout a tenner.

Don't quite understand why cylinders 1 and 4 aren't affected as all cylinders are fed air by a common source

Is it not possible that water could have been getting into cylinders 2 and 3 if the head gasket was faulty at that point.

Don't stick too much in otherwise you'll get 'hydraulic lock' which is the problem you get when driving a vehicle thru deep water & it gets sucked in via the air inlet.
