can anyone help. at the speed of 50to 60mph, i get a sound as if you are driving over large cat eyes. and a sound like a train running slow . took it to garage they seem not to no what it is, it sounds like its coming from the back nearside, this also happends when i take my foot of the gas it will knock, put my foot on again as to put pressure on the drive it stops. i got the bongo up to when it starts to knock and put it in neutral, so no drive on the shaft and the knocking was still there, any clues please thanks accrag

UJ worn on the propshaft? In neutral but at speed the prop is still going round at a healthy rate so can still be noisy.

Had a UJ go on a Hilux recently (front end of rear propshaft) - sounded terrible when driving or coasting, but you couldn't find any play when you shook the prop by hand. Once I had the UJ out it was obviously very worn. Simple enough to replace, but to get the cups out sometimes needs a serious amount of heat - Local tyre & exhaust place removed them for me (NOT the ones who can't spell)

The shoogly joint also damaged the diff input shaft seal, and I lost quite al ot of diff oil. :(

Yup, UJ is the universal Joint. See if you can get the Bongo up in the air and have a good close look at them. It was obvious looking at the worn one that it was well past its best. The diff oil seal was also obvious once I had a look on a ramp - there was oil dripping out the front seal. I don't know how common it is to have a seal go due to the vibration caused when a UJ gives up - but my son had been driving with it grumbling for some time so it had probably done something like 400 miles more than it should have......

Hi
Here's another one that's hard to spot....I've had it occur on two different cars....and both times a garage failed to spot it. Take the wheel off, and VERY carefully examine the sidewall...you may find the tyre has a bulge or carbuncle in it...I have had this on a tyre that appeared NEARLY normal, and it really can make a clonking sound that's quite unbelievable. sometimes a tread anomaly can do this as well.....put your spare on and give it a try.....on one car, I could only just detect the faintest blip in the tyre, and it sounded so severe, we called into a garage that said it was a serious problem, and I shouldn't drive!
Anyway, whatever it turns out as... I hope you fix it cheaply!
Cheers
Helen

When an employer is refering to one's suitability in one's place of employment, the expression one may hear is.........
