Lots of debate on this one if you do a search, I use 5w30 semi synth & change it about every 5000miles/6months, new filter every other oil change. Some use 10w40 I think, for an aging diesel, I don't reckon it makes a huge difference, I have used a slick 50 flush & additive (about 18 months ago I think) there are other additives which have been discussed on here in the past.

I'm with Kirsty. I do a lot of short cold runs so reckon a 5W bottom end is best for that. Otherwise, I'm on the open road generally, with plenty of cooling most of the time, so am OK about the 30 upper end spec. I'd try 5w40 but its too pricey and I'm too tight

A very good mechanic..or motor engineer as we are now supposed to call em, lol, once told me one of the best available surprisingly was the oil sold in Lidls, I have used it since then and change it every six months and it seems fine, I know everybody has thier own favorite tho so just go with what you fine the best for your motor.

I agree with Dave!

We've always used Lidls oil for top-ups,mine for the Bongo, and the other halfs for the
Daihatsu Hijet!

IMHO,Oil is oil! If it's in there it'll do it's job,if it ain't it won't!! Any oil is better than no oil at all
I'd use tractor oil if I had too!!

Mine came from Imperial with semi-synthetic, rating unspecified. I changed it to "Mobil 1" 0W/40 when it was serviced last September. Didn't improve fuel consumption but idling was smoother, and I reckon it's generally quieter. Obviously, the operating temperature range is the best available, so it can be driven reasonably hard from a very cold start, and still lubricates well at high speed in a heatwave - so should help engine life, despite what it says in the fact sheet ("..no point using in an already well-used engine..." - I don't believe it).
It's on a good deal at Halfords (online, at least) at the moment. £38.39 for 5 litres - normally £47.99.

Got to admit Ron,when I was 19 (20 years ago!) I used nothing but Mobil 1!

In my MG Metro Turbo and my
1960s' Volkswagon powered Beach Buggy!! It was £20 then!!

Can't afford now

53 years ago, in my case
Like the sound of the beach buggy. I was defending (what remained of) the Empire at that age

I tend to use Fuchs 10/30 which I get from GSF Autospares, the same stuff they use in the other half's C3 Citroen for 20,000 mile intervals.....so we have it in common for any needed top ups......
