I have just ordered some "steel seal" the guy on the phone said I may need two bottles as its a 2.5TDI, but I am not sure about that, but I bought two anyway, two bottles plus next day delivery £69.00.
He also said I needed Halfords best antifreeze with ETHELYNE GLYCOL and he said dont use comma antifreeze. So I went and bought Halfords best, I then checked on "steel seals" website and they say the antifreeze must be a `two year life`and definitely not a `five year life`like the one I have just bought as the 5year
may not work properly with steel seal. So its back to Halfords for some 2year,
i just hope they have some, I will keep you posted on whether steel seal works and for how long.

Was the 5 year coolant you bought red coloured?

It does look like its red through the transparent line on the can, it Halfords Advanced antifreeze and coolant

Have you checked the thread concerning Steel Seal...... and as BDC says.... is your coolant the Red type...Don't put in any other.... don't bother about the 2 year/ 5 year denotation..... you will change every 2 years anyway..... best advice also is steer away from the children & numpties at Halfrauds...... Comma/Car Plan do a good longlife Red coolant... Most Motor Factors or A1 Motorstores and the like......stock it...

They may do an exchange with money your way if the container is unopened Burt...Or exchange for a couple of extra litres of blue perhaps.... (Red longlife coolant is generally 15-20% more expensive than the regular stuff)

Interesting that steel seal doesn't work with red...

Sounds like the guy at steel seal could be on Halfords xmas card list, so the red stuff that i have is the long life, but i am still not sure wether to change it or not?

It makes you wonder as to whether there is some chemical reaction anomoly that occurs if red is used.. Or like you say the dealer is spinning you a yarn. I'm pretty certain that Halfords coolant is re-packaged coolant by another manufacturer...Quite possibly Comma!

and it claims to be "A Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) based engine coolant / anti-freeze concentrate." so....... Steel Seal or no Steel Seal?

i would just read ingredients and see if it has " ETHELYNE GLYCOL " wich i dont think the red one has

Yes the Halfords red does have Ethelyne Glycol, which one did you use Bhongo Bhoy ?

ive only ever used the blue one when doing my coolant changes as my friend who i get it from tells me its the better one to use no other reason and as i plan to change the coolant every year instead of every 2 years i think the red one is meant for changing less often correct me if im wrong

I really doubt if it matters. The usual difference between normal and long life antifreeze is just the anti-corrosion additives - they're nearly all ethylene glycol based.
